Find a Chevy or GMC with a 350.
It'll be a beast

I also don’t think a 16 yr old needs as much power as new trucks have. New F150s are fast. Get him something slow. Bc he sucks at driving. Bc he’s 16.

Get an older truck like a 4cyl Toyota. Cost to buy, cost of ownership, cost for insurance, cost for maintenance - all way cheaper. Get one that needs a little work done on it, and he can work on it while he's still 15 and he can drive it when it's complete. Those skills and that exposure will pay dividends for him the rest of his life.
Get a regular cab. If you get him a crew cab he'll be parked off road every weekend and you'll be a grandpa sooner than you want to be.
Get a manual transmission. Everyone needs to learn how to drive a manual and if he has to shift gears, the less likely he is to text.
I was coming here to type EXACTLY what you wrote.

Why? Manuals are damn near extinct, and will fully be extinct in our lifetimes. It's like saying "get a car with a hand crank instead of an electric starter"

You can buy the kid something nice if you want to. If he will use a truck, get him a truck, but like others said don't get a truck just because that's what he wants. I understand you made a deal with him and you want to hold up your end, but you'd be better off buying something cheaper and giving him the cash in a few years, he'll eventually appreciate it more anyway.
To get to the point, there's a good chance you will waste a lot of money if you buy him a new truck. There's a high chance he'll put damage on the vehicle, whether that's a wreck or backing into a pole. Find something 2 or 3 years old with 40k miles because if it's new and he damages it you will lose a lot of money when selling it. You'll come out a lot better if the value of the car is already starting to depreciate.

Yay, another 16 year old driving a big arse truck! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Have another vote for a 2-3 year old Camry/Accord/Civic. #1, it'll cost you half of what a new truck will. #2, it will be SIGNIFICANTLY easier for him to pilot. #3, these cars are going to be plenty safe. #4, cheaper to maintain than a truck.
And hey, it's your money to spend how you want, but personally I'd rather have an extra 10-15 grand to spend on myself than on a vehicle my kid doesn't truly need/deserve.
Guys, the kid wants to drive a truck and pull pussy. He doesn't want to drive a fricking sedan.
I totally agree he doesn't need a brand new vehicle. And I am as vocal as they come about people not being able to afford nice vehicles when these threads come up. But don't act like this is some huge 10-15k financial mistake. The Dad can find a decently priced used truck if he really wants to.

Liability only on my 18 year old son to drive a 2004 ford ranger is 360 a month on my policy. On his own would have been north of 450 a month.

It sounds like the OP is financially secure and money is not an issue to him so even if he loses big and/or the kids insurance doubles afterwards, I doubt the OP cares.
I do agree that the majority of kids tear up their first vehicle. I do agree with most of these responses. I wouldn't be too scared of the odometer reading if you buy used. I buy gas vehicles sometimes with over 300k on them that are in great mechanical shape. You can figure if they have that many miles someones taken care of it. In fact, if I was you I would probably specifically look for a vehicle with 200k plus miles that was still nice, so I could get it a lot cheaper than the same year model with 100k. But then again I'm a car buying expert, you're not.
Even though he makes good grades, you can expect him to wreck it within a year or so. A lot of kids do their first month.

You're an idiot if you buy a 15 y.o. a brand new truck.

Buy him a $200 1999 5 speed hyundai accent to drive to work so he can earn the money to buy himself the car/truck he wants.
That's what my dad did.

Not the years of the 350s champ. I owned 3 of em.
OP needs to find a 96-99 (early part)

I have only ever bought my own vehicles.
My first truck, I bought at an auction from the city of Alexandria for $250.
It was a total piece of shite, but I polished that m-fer to a shine. And painted it. And loved it, cause it was mine.
I now 100% take great care of my expensive truck because I learned on my own how to keep a vehicle rolling.
Allow your boy to learn the hard way. Put a cap of $5000 and roll from there.
Best wishes to you and fam.

This. I'm an F-150 fan and currently drive one and love it....but have had Tacoma's and they are great trucks, very dependable and top of the list for resale value.
