What you did there, I see it.

I'd never in my wildest dreams buy a new truck, they don't come with the nuts and the rolling coal mufflers

Find a 2009-2012 Tacoma and buy it.....see how he treats something older before you give him a new truck.

All great suggestions guys but a couple of things to mention. I am not very worried about insurance cost because I drive a company vehicle and he will be secondary driver on my wifes vehicle and the purchased vehicle so that will help that he is not primary driver on any one vehicle even though he technically will be. Another thing is that I don't even know how to change oil in a vehicle (sad I know) and he is as mechanically uninclined as I am so a fixer upper is a no go.

Sounds like you want to be his friend rather than his father.
That is not exactly the case here. I have been paying private school tuition from pre-k through 8th grade. That tuition was running me $10K per year. He wanted to leave his school after 8th grade and go to Baton Rouge Magnet High School which he did for 9th grade this year. I told him that if he made straight A's this year and continued to make straight A's I would buy him a nice vehicle to drive when he got his license since I did not have to pay tuition for him anymore. So we made a deal. He lived up to his side of the bargain. Now I am trying to do the same.

So let's see: attempting insurance fraud? Sounds reasonable. Good luck.
My insurance agent suggested this to me.

There is a reason why every third world country drives Toyotas and shoots AK 47's. They work with almost zero maintenance.

Yes. I am really leaning toward a Toyota Tacoma. I like the way that they look and they are very reliable.

Buy the kid a 2yrs old accord or camry for 15K.
I can almost guarantee with a new trucks, he'll be in a different vehicle before he hits 20.
I've seen it happen with 7 of my nephews/nieces except for one.
Probably 75% he'll be in an accident within 2yrs.

A) what do you drive
B) depending on A consider giving him that and buy new for you.
Our daughter drove a 2003 expedition that was her Granny's, then mine, then her brothers, then her other brothers and then hers. She drove that for more than a year and we just bought a 2016 Toyota for her. She was just short of 200,000 miles on it. She didn't like it but she appreciated it.

Does not fricking matter. Insurance company is going to see a 16 year old driver and rate accordingly for it. Primary or not.

Yay, another 16 year old driving a big arse truck! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Have another vote for a 2-3 year old Camry/Accord/Civic. #1, it'll cost you half of what a new truck will. #2, it will be SIGNIFICANTLY easier for him to pilot. #3, these cars are going to be plenty safe. #4, cheaper to maintain than a truck.
And hey, it's your money to spend how you want, but personally I'd rather have an extra 10-15 grand to spend on myself than on a vehicle my kid doesn't truly need/deserve.

Get him a used Tacoma. That way you can still pay the price of a new vehicle, without actually buying the new vehicle.

Hmmm. Funny how I did the exact same thing for my oldest son and our insurance premium was about 2/3 of what it would have been if he was primary driver on his truck as opposed to secondary on both vehicles.

Check Enterprise car sales and other rental car places that sell their inventory.
