Speeding is still Illegal. So is driving recklessly both of which it sounds like the biker was doing regardless of the legality of lane splitting.

1. The dude on the crotch rocket is an idiot.

2. The thing with lane splitting is it was essentially intended to allow motorcyclists to avoid having to sit in a traffic jam. A lot of motorcycles are air cooled and cannot sit and idle for extended periods of time without overheating. But it was never intended for what this guy was doing.

I think we need to have a tiered license system where you should start out on two wheels to get rid of this extremely bad habit.

And yet a very large percentage of motorcycle riders in this state choose not to take the motorcycle safety course before getting their license.

But I need extra training.

As already mentioned, land splitting is illegal in La., as is riding side by side on motorcycles on the roadways. Motorcyclists should be staggered, one on the inside of the lane closer to the shoulder and the other on the outside of the lane closer to the centerline, but not side by side.

I've been on motorcycles for close to 50 years now and I've seen my share of idiots on bikes doing all sorts of stupid crap designed to get themselves killed. And yes, the worst are the crotch rocket riders as most of them are young and think they are immortal for some reason.

Then take into consideration a 600cc sport bike can easily hit over 150 mph right off the showroom floor and it's a recipe for disaster.

Way to make this about you, a tiered license system would make EVERYONE get extra training.

BTW, Motorcyclists take the same style shitty test as drivers no matter if they take a MSF style course or just go straight to gettting their license.

I taught the MSF course, it's not going to make you a magically competent rider. I don't even find it good enough to put someone on the road. It's funny though when the cruiser guys that claim they been riding for years come into them with their girlfriend/wife and expect to show everyone how to ride and they can barely do the exercises in the course.

Driving and Riding requires a lot more skill and attitude adjustment that we just don't do in this country that could save a lot of lives. A very low percentage of driver/riders take further courses after they get their license and that's sad. Just getting rid of this sense of entitlement on the road would help a lot too.

I could wear mom jeans. I mean you guys stereotype the sportbike riders, only fair to stereotype the moving orange cones that are cruiser riders.

Lane splitting started in Asia as a means to get the traffic flowing better

It probably didn't start there, it's been a thing everywhere that has a dense population

I started seeing it in Tokyo in July of 1989. At that time Japan had about 125 million people. They all lived on an a series of islands that has less square footage than CA.

Anyway, that is 29 years ago and I personally observed it. I never observed it back then in Europe, North America, South America, or Australia.

What experience do you have to make you jump up and state that I am probably wrong?

That's called lane splitting. Its legal out here in Los Angeles and it drives me crazy.

It may be legal in Louisiana by virtue of there being no law on the book but I'm not sure.

There are motorcycle touring books that discuss it a lot older than 89.

It's has been pretty popular in Europe for motorcycles and bicycles for awhile.

We’ve had this exact conversation before. And just as before I’ve never stereotyped anyone based on the type of bike they choose to ride. There are good riders on cruisers, touring bikes, dual sport, scooters, and yes, even crotch rockets. There are also idiots on all of those types as well. The point being that the type of bike someone chooses to ride doesn’t indicate anything about the skill of the rider. Only douchebags judge others based on their bike preference.

If you are going less than 30 mph on something like the interstate, you are in pretty heavy traffic. It's not asking too much of you to pay attention of a vehicle going at most 10 mph faster than you.

Of course it is, if you're expected to look at an area where the only thing that could be there is a non car/truck.

It is asking too much of drivers going 70-75 to avoid motorcycles going 100+ lane splitting.

Why is the issue "avoiding motorcycles?" Shouldn't it be "if you want to ride a thing that's incredibly hard to see and you feel the need to drive it in a way that makes it nowhere near as noticeable as all other vehicles on the road, you are 100% responsible for your own safety."

quote:

This is due to poor training, I think we need to have a tiered license system where you should start out on two wheels to get rid of this extremely bad habit.

Yeah...let's train an entire driving force to worry about 2% of the potential vehicles on the road with them, instead of simply telling people that if they desire to ride an inherently dangerous vehicle in an area that is dangerous given what they're driving, they assume all risks.

The good thing about people on motorcycles that do this is that when they kill themselves, it isn’t anyone else’s fault.

Not true, there is a lot you can learn about a person from their bike and the way it is setup.

I guess I'm a big douchbag.
20-40% of the crotchrocket guys ride like asshats and will probably need a skin graft at some point.
60-75% of the Harley guys are retirees trying to be Billybadass and can't ride worth a crap. Most will be hit from behind while they are holding up traffic, or will fall over in an easy turn and break multiple bones.
100% of the BMW riders have more luggage, tank bags, and dayglow jackets/pants than anyone needs. 99% know how to ride, but will never be cool enough to get laid.

Stereotypes are correct a lot more than not.

The issue isn’t just motorcycles though, it’s basic road safety. Motorcycles are relatively big compared to a lot of dangers on the road and adjusting to conditions.

The entire driving force is severely undertrained to begin with, motorcycles is just one small portion of the training that needs to be upgraded. Starting out on two wheels helps overall to create a better driver.
