So my guess is that if you hit a bike that's splitting, you're at fault

Legality isn't the same thing as liability for fault in an accident.

Even if it's legal the moto driver could still be at fault if doing it in an unreasonably unsafe manner.

just looked at the CALl law. It's illegal to lane split above 30 mph.

I think before they changed the law a motorcyclist couldn't travel more than 15 mph faster than the traffic around him while lane splitting.

I've seen the same thing. Idiots lane splitting at 100+. Also seen the same idiots pop wheelies after clearing the interstate traffic.

I’ve seen it. It’s the kind of thing that makes your b hole and chode pucker into the back of your throat, then your stomach feels sick.

I saw a guy go skidding down the road by Walk ons in Baton Rouge when he lost control of his crotch rocket by the curve there. He had the jacket on, but I still don’t know how he didn’t die.

It wasn’t fun to witness.

Its legal out here in Los Angeles and it drives me crazy.

This is literally the only thing I remember from the CA drivers license book/exam (20 years ago). I had to reread it 10 times because I couldn't believe that was the law, esp in CA.

I am pretty sure its illegal to lane split at 100 mph everywhere, except maybe Asia.

It annoys me when these dudes do this at stop lights even. Surprised I have never seen one take off a mirror yet.

That same jackass does it in the morning too, in the construction zone. I've almost hit him

Lane splitting started in Asia as a means to get the traffic flowing better. It was designed to let motorcycles/scooters get to the front at traffic lights so they could turn or just go on.

Well that certainly puts a different slant on it.

It probably didn't start there, it's been a thing everywhere that has a dense population. In Europe it's called lane filtering.

It's a very useful traffic tool when the riders aren't passing at excessive speeds like in this case. Problem in the States why we don't see it more outside of California are our attitudes while driving and our complete disregard for decent training for drivers.

This country is full of ignorant low skill assholes at the wheel.

Would be nice for it to be a thing here, but it would also be nice to see more courtesy and skill on the road as well.

In pretty much every traffic condition, it's much safer for a motorcycle to filter at a reasonable speed than it is to operate like a car in heavy traffic. It's just not very safe for motorcycles in heavy traffic.

The new rules stress that motorcyclists can only split lanes as long as they don’t exceed ten miles per hour faster than the cars they are driving between, and said cars must be going less than 30 miles per hour. Reaction by motorcyclists is mixed. Some are glad to finally have some restrictions in place, so that there are now stated parameters for being pulled over my law enforcement. But others worry that this may be the beginning of the end, and that a complete ban on lane-splitting is soon to come.

That's honestly insane. Look...I get that some folks enjoy motorcycles, but given their relatively small size in comparison to everything else on the road and the fact that almost none of them move like a car/truck does (they tend to slide in and out of lanes faster) it's almost asking too much of drivers to "look out for motorcycles" in normal circumstances. As a driver you're keying on a certain type of size and movement of vehicles around you. Motorcycles almost never fit that, and always seem to come out of nowhere and then disappear. The only ones that tend to not behave that way are larger Harley type bikes with what look like seasoned drivers who also understand this and have no interest in dying so they try and make sure they're visible.

But expecting drivers to also be aware of something that essentially should not take place (having any vehicles come down the center lines between you and another car/truck is kind of like expecting drivers to be aware of flying vehicles that just might happen to drop down in front of them from the fricking sky.

If you are going less than 30 mph on something like the interstate, you are in pretty heavy traffic. It's not asking too much of you to pay attention of a vehicle going at most 10 mph faster than you. A lot of your complaint is based more around much higher speed differential. It is asking too much of drivers going 70-75 to avoid motorcycles going 100+ lane splitting.

It's actually much safer for a motorcycle being outside the normal traffic patterns in heavy traffic though. Getting hit and run over by a driver not paying attention happens more when motorcycles are in line with cars than when they take it to center lines or shoulders. I never ride in the center of the lane in heavy traffic, that's just asking to get run over.

This is due to poor training, I think we need to have a tiered license system where you should start out on two wheels to get rid of this extremely bad habit.

I had something similar happen to me on I-12 in BR, except it was a state trooper on a bike. My turn signal had even been on for several seconds, looked over my shoulder to see that it was clear, and then as I get halfway into the lane this bike is suddenly making a high speed move around that same side.

Thankfully, I didn't hit him and he just continued on his merry way.
