Driving down I-10 towards Gonzales, in the left lane, going with the flow. I have cars in front of me and behind me, in the left lane.

I had just passed a slower truck in the right lane and there was a large gap between the truck I just passed and the car in front of him.

The two cars in front of me had a gap in front of them, so I nudged over to the right lane to see if there was a gap so I could get in front of the two cars in front of me.

As I did this, I catch a light in my rear view mirror. Some jackass on a crotch rocket, doing 100+ mph, passed the two trucks behind me (one in left lane, one in right lane). They were side by side, and the motorcycle passed between them on the centerline.

As he passed them, I was ducking to the right lane, causing the motorcycle to go onto the shoulder to pass me.

He passed me and preceded to pass the next set of vehicles that were side by side, passing them between them.

TLDR

Short version

Motorcycle passes between two vehicles going 100+ mph, I accidentally forced him on to the shoulder. He continues to pass people, driving down centerline of interstate.

I keep hoping one day I get to witness this where the motorcyclists then loses it and slides 1/4 mile down the pavement.

This guy wouldn't have slide. He would have hit my rear end and then been run over by one of the two trucks he just passed, or could have gone flying off the shoulder, into the woods

That's called lane splitting. Its legal out here in Los Angeles and it drives me crazy.

It may be legal in Louisiana by virtue of there being no law on the book but I'm not sure.

How can it be legal? And if it is legal, what's the point of having lanes?

It's not legal in Louisiana, and I think it's only legal in California if the two side by side vehicles are not moving, as in traffic jam.

They can be moving, it's just incredibly wreckless and dumb.

I'd do all that in a sedan if I knew it meant I was going to beat baton rouge traffic.

So you are saying if the scenario in my OP happened in CA, and I killed the dumbass, I'm at fault?

Because it's not illegal. There's no law on the book.

And in Los Angeles where traffic is a nightmare, for the bikers it's a massive advantage that I don't think government wants to mess with.

When it comes to fault I'm honestly not sure. All I can tell you is my understanding of the law.

So, if he hit his car and was harmed during his maneuver..would the motorcyclist have a case?

Actually I just looked it up, and as of February 2018 lane splitting out here is officially legal.

So my guess is that if you hit a bike that's splitting, you're at fault.

My guess is, it's legal out there, but basically do it at your own risk. I cannot see me being at fault in the scenario I stated in the OP.

I just looked at the CALl law. It's illegal to lane split above 30 mph.

The new rules stress that motorcyclists can only split lanes as long as they don’t exceed ten miles per hour faster than the cars they are driving between, and said cars must be going less than 30 miles per hour. Reaction by motorcyclists is mixed. Some are glad to finally have some restrictions in place, so that there are now stated parameters for being pulled over my law enforcement. But others worry that this may be the beginning of the end, and that a complete ban on lane-splitting is soon to come.
