There are motorcycle touring books that discuss it a lot older than 89.

I would love to read one. Link?

I think it's only legal in California if the two side by side vehicles are not moving, as in traffic jam.

Don't have a problem with this. In non-moving traffic. Any DA that tries it at speed/hwy conditions deserves everything that happens to them.

And this comes from a rider....

If you want to see it done to the absolute extreme check out the Ghost Rider vids on Youtube. Guy is/was a former superbike racer and has all these vids of him riding like frickin nuts in Europe, where lane-splitting is legal everywhere (from what I gather).
It will make your skin crawl and your manhood shrink up like you set down in an ice bath. Guy had insane skills, but had to be insane to ride like that.

Here is one of his vids. Start from @ the 27 minute mark if you want to feel your sphincter seal up. LINK

I had an incident on I-5 a couple of months ago. I was switching from the center lane to the left hand lane and I looked up and after I got into the left lane, I saw a motorcycle on the shoulder, who apparently I had forced them over when I switched lanes. He got in behind me and was beeping his horn and flipping me the bird. I did not see him, but I was apologetic, and signaled to him that I was sorry.

He kept flipping me the bird and then when he got a chance, passed me and gave me the bird as he went by. He then proceeded to start weaving in and out of traffic, while doing about 80-90 mph, and traffic was relatively heavy at the time. I figured out that the reason I hadn't seen him is because he was weaving in and out and came out from behind another car at the same time I was switching lanes, and not because I just didn't see him when I looked.

Saw the same kind of a-hole, guy was driving 100+ on 20/59 towards Birmingham. Dude misjudged a guy in a F350 pulling 5th wheel trailer. F350 had his side mirrors extended so he could watch the trailer and the crotch rocketeer slammed face first into the mirror and lost control falling off the bike and got run over by the 5th wheel double axle.

Ouch. Darwin award winner!!

Take me awhile to find which book, by then I doubt I will remember this thread. I got a decent library of touring books as someone who wants to go around the world on two. If you want something just to show it existed outside of Asia before 89. Just look up Harry Hurt, he studied all types of motorcycle accidents in the late 70s in Cali.

Figuring out where to go in your lane has been a thing ever since different modes of transportation started popping up on roads. Europe had a fit with bicycles vs cars when cars caught on. Something well before my lifetime.
