We used to go door to door in the neighborhood collecting money for MD and then we would go to the local tv station and get to walk across the stage and dump the money in a big barrel. I don't think we ever kept the money for ourselves

It was still on in the late 90s too.
But it wasn’t the same. It didn’t have the Vegas lounge feel to it (even tho as a kid, I didn’t know what a “Vegas lounge feel” felt like)

Jerry always seemed a bit sleazy on the show, like Bob Barker with an edge. He would cry, then quickly transition into biting remarks. The next day during the end of the show, he'd act as if he couldn't go on any longer, and was struggling to make it but had to do the money might be raised.
Meanwhile, the affiliate network here in BR would have local announcers calling out residents by name. "And where's -insert name-? He just sold his company and out living large. Why hasn't he called in? Is he too good for this now?"
It may have done a lot of good for fighting a terrible illness, but the whole show seemed low ball.

I existed on a steady diet of The A Team, Silver Spoons and the Dukes of Hazzard back then, so i feel like the MD Telethon was pretty much par for the course.

Yep. There were so many kids doing this, you had to hustle to beat the others to houses.

Did they ever parade you out during local coverage to help get the phones ringing?
They did a special on me once with me tubing (riding in a tube behind my friend's boat).
This was when I was.. 19-20 years old, give or take a year.. One day I was going out on the water with some friends who did a lot of wakeboarding at the time. The woman called me up the day before and was like "we have to shoot the segment tomorrow afternoon" and asked me if there was anything specific they can focus on, etc.
Preferring to go with my buddies instead of doing that segment, I suggested they come out and they can do something with me in the boat and tubing, etc. The woman thought it was a good idea. I knew they wouldn't be able to spin that story to make it look sympathetic.
After the telethon the woman called me and told me they almost pulled the segment, but they needed the content. She said that it didn't really tell a story that goes in the direction they like to go in.

Nobody really liked being held hostage by that telethon. 24 hours of kids pouring change into a fish tank, firemen filling up boots, Ronald McDonald, Ed McMahon not being funny, and Jerry Lewis' overly greased hair.
It's not a coincidence that it was hugely successful when there were only three networks and the other two wouldn't air anything against it, but went away once cable really became big and people had other options.

What makes me ungrateful and what people are you referring to?

There was a comedian, who had MS i believe and was stuck in a wheel chair, and he hated Jerry Lewis. He used to go on Stern show and rip him a new a-hole, talking about how much of a dickbag jerry was, how he made you beg for $ to get a new wheel for wheelchair, etc.
I want to say his name was gary, but i'm 2 lazy to look.

The late Ossie Brown was great at that.

It shut down after he died. I think he died before labor day and they ended up doing it that year, but after that they did a short version of it and then it went out the window.
That's another part that I thought was questionable. Lewis ran this thing every year.
Look at the Our Lady of the Lake Children Hospital. They do the big raffle for a Lexus and I think they do something else to raise money.
They did have that one guy who was stealing from it, but the money they raise is actually used and you can see the money being donated being used for what it is supposed to use for.
Same with the Ronald McDonald House and Make A Wish..And those groups don't center around one person (I mean the Ronald McDonald, but that's a fictional person). At one point MDA would help pay for wheelchair parts (it wasn't much, but it was something) but while they were raising more and more money, they cut back on helping people with MD. And that was only for people who didn't have insurance.

In my mind it never ended. I close my eyes and I still see jerry, Ed McMahon, Liza minelli and those precious little kids. And I see the big board and the phone operators and then I weep. Softly

I am not sure what good came of it in terms of fighting it.
