his ridiculous push to Division 1-A

I never understood this move. NLU had a home in the Southland with good rivalries. I guess they felt like if LA Tech was doing it than they should too. However, Tech has always tried to distance itself from NLU as a more glamorous university and honestly I agree since they were better equipped then and now to handle 1-A. I guess it is because they have deep pocketed boosters that actually care about the school. ULM/NLU survives on a shoestring budget with almost zero support from Monroe and being perennial losers in every sport besides water skiing doesn't exactly help.

My senior year, we beat West Monroe 7 to 0. We only won 2 games. Shows you how good West Monroe was back then. (50 years)

NLU and USL will always be their names to me . ULL needs to get over it they will never be UL no matter how hard their sports info director or the town tries to name them that. Northeast just sounds better than ULM . Indians way better than warhawks . Hate it

But going into a season with your highest hopes being a 6-6 record and a shot at some off-label bowl game just sucks all the joy out of it.

It took almost 20 years to reach 6-6 again (if memory serves the 6th win was the one against Bama). Going from a national championship and multiple years making it to at least the first round of playoffs to almost two decades of straight losing seasons (and the absolute BRUTAL beatings by 1A schools) was heavily demoralizing.

When facing the Alumni Center, it's in that lot to the right.

I hear they should be strong in conference this year

They've improved a lot since hitting that 6-6 mark in 2007. This year they took Florida State to the limit (44-45 in OT). It's been a long, tough road and I don't think they're "back" yet but they are definitely getting there.

You are damn right! Was an DJ there from ‘89 to ‘91 and it absolutely had the best rotation of music ever. Classic college alternative and classic rock mix with something for everyone. Have very fond memories of Donny the Christmas Eve show a couple of those years. Finished on air at midnight, poured myself another charter and coke and fifteen minutes later we were on air again for an hour or so with a Cult mini concert. Cowboy Jim Payne from BTE was also there at the time.

I worked there from late '90 to '93. I remember Christmas shows. Was told I could play anything in the studio (whether on CD or vinyl) as long as I played one power song an hour. I may know you or definitely seen your name on the old rosters.

I’ve heard this before and don’t understand the reasoning at all. It’s still a great atmosphere! If all the people that feel this way would just get over it and accept it and come to the games, you would enjoy it. And btw, they still do the Indian chop , or whatever it’s called.

Northeast should have stayed Northeast and they should have remained a good 1AA sports program instead of going to 1A and getting shite beat out of it by schools no one recognizes.

One of my uncles graduated from there in the early 60s. I always thought he went to Southern (MS) like the rest of the fam, but my dad said no, he got kicked out of Ole Miss the night before he even started school because the cops busted up a bourré game he had organized. I guess Northeast took pity on him and let him enroll.

Didn’t they have an Ed Zaunbracher or something like that as coach. Think he was one of their first 1-A coaches. He kinda sucked from what I remember. NLU is better than ULM.

ULM has been making great strides as of late. New buildings and construction on campus that actually look great. A lot more alumni support. They are on the upswing. Oh and I love the new logo.

During his tenure as head coach at the Northeast Louisiana, Zaunbrecher transitioned the football program from Division I-AA to Division I-A. He held that position for five seasons, from 1994 until 1998. His coaching record at the Northeast Louisiana was 20–36.[1] The highlights of his stint at Northeast Louisiana included victories over Southeastern Conference teams Mississippi State and Kentucky, and giving numerous other teams scares including a 1996 near victory over a ranked Auburn team.
