These kind of threads are why the OT exists.

He can do it, assuming the weather cooperates and the course isn't too hilly.

He's gonna have to dig down a bit, though.

He'd better stretch plenty and not overhydrate.

show up dressed in the coolest gear of whatever you running nerds think is cool for those things, go through this very elaborate and theatrical warmup and stretching routine, then pull up lame after a few hundred yards grabbing your hammie and screaming like a banshee, tell her to keep going and you'll catch up and meet her at the finish then go and try to get laid

GAMEPLAN.

Run tonight, will post results. The race is chipped time and results are recorded on their website, so I'll of course share the results whenever they're posted this Saturday. I picked up my free t shirt on Friday.

I’d be will to bet the average person can not run a 5k in under 30 minutes.

You're only chance is to run with her and gut it out to hold her pace. Your odds are not good and you are likely to get embarrassed by this girl (even at her pace). Pray for a cold snap and I hope you are in your 20s or 30s. With this heat, you are likely toast, but good luck.

My advice would be to own up before the race that you've embellished yourself and agree to start running with her going forward. That takes pressure off the race performance and you can walk parts of it without race day embarrassment from her.

If you have not run in years (or your life), you should be able to hold 9:30 pace for about a mile, but you will be gasping terribly. Even at 10/min mile (her pace), you will be struggling mightily.

I started running about a year and a half ago starting about 25 lbs overweight at 5' 10" and about 200lbs at 42 years old. I had not been a runner before. The first time I ran....let's say it was about a mile and a half and was not pretty.

Did you really need to lie just to impress your sister like that? She probably already knows you don't run.

I plan on checking out the route at some point this week. Looks to be entirely flat.

Also, don't overrun your first mile. Adrenaline will make you think you're gonna fly, but it won't hold for 30 minutes.

If you knock out the first mile in 9:00 or so, you'll know you can do the other two in 9:15-20 and still be under 29 for the total.

Forget the $40. You felt a pop in your knee while running tonight.

C'mon man. You can do that. It's only a little over 3 miles. My ole man did 3 miles in 21 minutes...but that was when he was 5'8" and 170 and in the USMC...running every day.

Exactly. This is for a charity that is very close to her heart.

Okay, here's what you really do. Get as many friends as you can do go to the race. If you can get like 5 friends to show up you just raised $200 for the object of your obsession's charity.

Run the race as best you can. When your slow arse finally catches up to her at the finish after she's had 2 or 3 beers come clean. Tell her you've never run a day in your life but you wanted to impress her. She'll think it's adorable, yall will have a good laugh, and she'll give you all the sex you can handle.
