I can confirm. Actually, it’s the cooling system in the transmission that is insufficient. If I take my car on a long trip and don’t go over about 68 mph, it does fine. If I stay on 70 or above the transmission starts slipping and the car soon starts to lose power.

2025 Nissan Versa S 5-speed. MSRP with destination is only $18,330. A shitbox, sure, but it's a new shitbox with no CVT.

One of the major reasons that new cars and trucks cost so much is that the ICE vehicles are subsidizing the cost of those electric vehicles. Also the cost of UAW contracts / healthcare costs.

By used if you can.

Just went over 260k in a 2012 Honda Odyssey.

Damn thing is nearly bullet proof. Only issue recently is a slight oil leak near the alternator. It looks like an easy job to fix, but Honda wants you to change the entire part instead of replacing the gasket. Honda will only sell you the entire part with the gasket as an OEM part and you can possibly find the OEM gaskets on eBay. I haven’t looked.

Also, the tranny gets a little wonky at maintaining 45 mph, but it still rolls.

Bought my daughter the Nissan Versa back in July before she started college. Wanted something newer since she was living away. it was $18k and we put over half down for an extremely low note for 2 years. Was shocked to find a new car with tons of features that cheap.

I traded my 07 Altima CVT in during covid and it had 255k on it. Got a 21 Rogue and so far 60k no issues

Wife has a 13 Pathfinder CVT with 135k no issues

That Nissan CVT is indeed a gamble. I've driven two Nissans, both to 120,000+ miles. One had a CVT and one didn't. Both were fantastic cars for me and I never had CVT issues thankfully.

What surprised me about my last Nissan was how much the insurance on it was -- no accidents, no tickets. Purchased a new car non-Nissan worth a lot more money than the Nissan and I upped the coverage pretty significantly and my insurance went down. I asked my insurance agent and he said Nissans are expensive to insure because of the high claim volumes involving them. Altimas. Go figure.

About 8 years ago Nissan had the big CVT problems. Now they are on par with other manufacturers - no better, no worse.
I like gears and, for a small car, I would spend more on a used Mazda which has good old planetary gears.

Nissan transmissions are horrible though. My sister just gave up on her Versa after 110k because of the transmission.

Tesla allegedly producing a small car for under 18k in 2025. The price is right especially given how few affordable vehicles other manufacturers are selling

Apparently not anymore?

quote:

Speaking on Tesla's third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Musk described building an affordable non-autonomous EV as "pointless" in response to a question asking when investors can expect a "$25,000 non-robotaxi regular car model."

"I think having a regular $25,000 model is pointless. It would be silly. It would be completely at odds with what we believe," he said.

The billionaire said all of Tesla's upcoming vehicles would be autonomous, and that it should be "blindingly obvious" that self-driving EVs are the future.

Musk's comments will likely come as a blow to Tesla fans hoping for a truly mass-market model.

I think I hate that

I see a role for autonomous vehicles especially for elderly people who don't drive safely. But I don't want my car to be able to do what it pleases.

I don't even want it to communicate with my phone or squawk at me for crossing lanes in a construction zone.

I just want a reliable car that looks nice with a minimum of electronics, gadgets, maintenance costs, and no big brother data collected
