What are you, retarded? A 15 - 20% tip does not equal twice as much.

I had a case that required me to stay in Dallas at the Westin Galleria. I had a beat up Lumina with 400,000 miles on it. I tipped and was nice to the valets, so they left my car out front with the Maseratis and Ferraris (the show off cars they leave out front).

How long ago was this if you dont mind me asking? I used to valet at the Westin Galleria(as well as the Grand Lux and Grille adjacent). The valet company that runs the valet there has properties all over the metroplex, but they put their best employees in the company to work at the Galleria. Because there is a shitload of money to be made. On weekends I usually made north of $200 a shift. Some nights I made over $300 or $400, my best nights I cleared $500

Let me guess, you're that guy who chugs down 15 to 16 sweet teas or diet cokes during a meal and gets pissed if you have to wait on a refill?

These people are the absolute worst, the ones who go through a dozen refills per meal and have bladders of a camel or something

I had one guy drink his entire coke in one sip when I was dropping of drinks at the table and hand me the empty glass before I was even done passing the drinks out. Then for the rest of his shift each time I would walk by he would stand up and shake his glass at me. frick that guy.

I made good money but I did a good job and built up a stable of regulars.

Most of my regulars were regulars I acquired because things out of my control were going to hell and I was able to keep a good attitude and handle it well.

Fortunately most customers aren't assholes like the retards in this thread who think its best to send a message to the server himself/herself when something goes wrong even if its not the server's fault

In a thread about people being self righteous, that is the epitome.

Nope, just the opposite. I don't like those who just because they 'work' in a service industry 'feel entitled' to anything extra regardless of how shitty their service & work might be. ... It's really very simple --- work hard & give proper, good service, get paid extra for it; be lazy & lackadaisical, not giving one frick about the shitty service given, don't expect a tip from me or you'll be disappointed. God forbid people get rewarded in direct correlation & in proportion to the work they put in. But not surprised in the least that folks these days define that sentiment as "self-righteous."

Its not about that though, you are full of shite, because you have people who still stiff or tip poorly even those who work hard

Thats what we get upset about

It's not about getting mad when we get stiffed even when we do a shitty job. Its about getting stiffed when we did do a good job just because you morons have ultra ultra ultra high standards and/or invent shite out of thin air to use as reason not to tip.

The bottom line is a lot of cheap people will do anything to justify not tipping or leaving a shitty tip. If the service is so bad that one is inclined to not tip, the manager should be notified.

Sadly, for the most part, a lot of people in this thread will stiff a server because their unlimited breadsticks or cheddar bay biscuits ran out before a refill hit the table. Another common one is trashy idiots who are used to chewing on shoe leather at Ryan's or Golden Corral, freak out when their "medium" steak is pink in the middle and not charred to a crisp.

I'm sure his has already been said, but its completely ridiculous that the consumer is supposed to have a working knowledge of service workers' wages so we can tell if they need a tip or not.

"Oh this server only makes $2.13 an hour. He'll starve if you don't pay him extra. I'll leave extra money regardless of the quality of service."

"You don't need to put money in that barista's tip jar. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics their average wage is $12 an hour."

Jesus Christ, just tell us what the price is, I'd rather pay more up front than not have to think about that. How is a foreigner supposed to understand the unwritten rules of tipping when visiting?

Of course I always tip.. 18-20% for regular service, more or less for better/worse. But the system is ridiculous.

It's because they have never waited tables before so they go into a restaurant assuming the waiter assigned to their table has absolutely no other customers to tend to and that is the ONLY table the waiter is assigned to. Of course waiting tables would be an easy mindless job if you only had one table to serve.

The last waiting job I had, I was the shift leader for the bar area. I had 4 tables zoned to me that sat anywhere between 4-6 people, and then I had the 4 high top tables zoned that people could self seat at. So when it got busy and customers inevitably would self-seat themselves at the high tops, I had as many as 8 tables to serve at one time. It's a lot harder than it sounds.

Not only did I have those 8 tables but as shift leader of the bar section my running shift duties were to help the bartender(s) out with what they needed. In other words I was basically a barback. If they were out of ice it was up to me to refill it. If they were out of a type of beer or needed a new keg it was up to me to go get it.

So even if I wanted to slack off I couldn't because there was way too much shite to do.

Even if you are a Superman waiter if you have 8 tables + barback duties on a busy night you are going to make a mistake eventually. Waiters are human, not robots.

Lolz ... Reposting this just for you since apparently you have an issue with reading comprehension...

Yes, it is EXACTLY "about that though," at least for me it is; I don't speak for others. I don't know how more uncomplicated to state it; it's a rather simple concept, so evidently, you might want to re-think that "moron" part.

I tip according to service given, as do most normal people --- give exceptional service with pleasant, engaging attitude, get exceptional tip, above 25%. Give standard decent average service, get average tip, 20%. Give shitty, lackadaisical, dgaf service, get dgaf tip. See how easy that is???

And I lol at your whining & bitching. I worked my arse off in an extremely upscale restaurant, trained by an old school strict as hell food & bev manager, throughout college for 5 years, so yes, I understand there are assholes; I'm very familiar, but they are few & far between, with the vast majority of patrons only desiring pleasant, knowledgeable, quality service - those are most people's "ultra ultra ultra high standards." So if you get "stiffed" on the reg, I suggest you might want to self-reflect & evaluate what you're doing wrong because the large majority of the time, that doesn't happen unless the server is at fault, and I don't mean things which are out of the server's control i.e. backed-up kitchen, running out of items, etc, I'm talking about fault of the server - 'forgetting' things incessantly, sometimes that the entire table even exists, bringing out wrong order, bringing out every course simultaneously, never going back to table to check on diners, having a DGAF attitude, and making excuses for all of it and/or blaming everyone/everything else for his own frick-ups. 99% of the time, these things are why tips are either low or non-existent; the assholes who simply refuse to tip are frustrating, but are such a low percentage, it is negligible, so to continue to stay stuck on them, bitching & moaning about such a slight percentage of people instead of going on with your business & your JOB of giving the best service you're capable of sounds like a personal issue, and maybe the food & beverage service industry isn't for you.

I understand your perspective, but I still tip 10% for bad service

20-25% for good service
