Was talking to my niece (no pics, she is 15) and she has finals next week. Her last day of school is in almost a month, may 25 or something. I asked what they did after finals until the last day, she said they get to retake finals- up to six times- until they get the grade they want.

This cant be true, right?

My calc 1 teacher at LSU let us do this. However he made the re-takes exponentially harder. Ppl who did try the re-takes never did better.

Yep, sounds like OP is getting fed a line of crap.

Never trust the word of a 15 year old girl. Have you never watched Mean Girls?

This is a real thing. Some HS teachers in this local area (SE La) do this also. Not sure if up to six times is allowed though.

Also know that some professors at SELU allow retakes. And why wouldn't they? I mean don't we all get do overs in our lives?

"Oh you drove drunk and killed a family of four? No biggie. You can just do it over."

"Oh you knocked up that floozy you brought home from the Cadillac two months ago? All is well.......just reset that night and wrap it up this time."

If it's truly like that and students are not getting A's in the classes that allow that, there is something serious wrong.

A re-take up to 6 times with the exact same test should result in some excellent grades

It's the no fail concept of high school graduation. I suggest you reference your school district's vision statement and note the goal for graduation rates...Here it is 95% by 2020. What the mission statement doesn't say is HOW those rates will be achieved. Several students will cram online/virtual classes into their final semester or take the same test repeatedly until they pass. Trust me, it's NOT the teachers that push this agenda. Politics...politics...

The goal should be for student ts to learn and retain info....not pass a test.

Read "money" through funding. Here in the Sunshine State each school is graded every year based on standardized tests, graduation/ matriculation numbers, as well as yes average GPA. Those with substandard grades are pressured to increase or risk a reduction in funding the next year.

Everything in public education is test/test results driven. The schools (teachers) are forced to teach the tests. Otherwise the results are unacceptable.

As a former military man, I have no problem with kids re-testing until they actually learn the concepts during the session (nine weeks / semester or whatever). You would train for battle to prepare yourself in the actual event of one. The Exam, however, should be one and done. It is what you trained for. Just my .02.

I agree with that. That is what homework, quizzes, etc are for.

In theory, these tests are tests of standards/skills. For example, can the student read two texts and write an argumentative essay using evidence from both. If the point is for students to master the standard, then a teacher could conceivably let a student retake after more instruction and practice in attaining the skill. The test, however, would need to be different each time.

This is not a policy at my son's TX high school. However, for a regular test, if you fail, you can retake the test for a maximum score of 70, but only after attending mandatory tutoring. Also, the same test is not given the second time.
