I went to high school in Texas and we never did that. We had Finals the last day of the semester and that's it.

Also, Texas high schools are graded on test scores... not just grades. So even if schools were letting kids graduate because they let them take a Final six times to make their graduation rate look good, they'd still be judged on their test scores.

I'll tell you this. I'm from the New Orleans area, and there isn't a chance in hell I would have gone to a public school there. They are horrible. My cousin made good grades at West Jeff and when she got to college she realized how unprepared she was.

When we moved to Houston, going to a private school wasn't necessary because there are many good public high schools.

it also greatly helps that the failing grade point for a student is a 37. A fricking 37 ...

(at least in HISD)

Having now three kids either through or in high school here, I am in a position to tell you with certainty it's certainly not true for their school or any other school in the system.

I can't say this isn't true with certainty since I don't have first hand knowledge, but I doubt it.

This also wasn't true when I went to school in the Houston suburbs. Anything below 70 was an F.

A: 100-90
B: 89-80
C: 79-75
D: 74-70
F: 69-0

I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong but I just asked the fiancé again to verify. And she said for HISD if they average above a 37, they pass.

I don't know what school/district has a failing grade all the way down to a 37. Anything below a 70 in our district is failing. That's why the max grade for a retake on a regular test is a 70.

I don't know what # she is referring to then. Maybe the failing point for their STAAR tests?

era: nope, those have SAT like scoring levels

Approaches Grade Level Performance
Meets Grade Level Performance
Masters Grade Level Performance

...man I really should've fact checked this woman before repeating on teh Internet as fact

I am a Texas public school teacher and can shed some light on this.

The whole system is geared specifically for these kids to pass state mandated tests, it's the only thing the districts care about as it impacts funding.

The teachers have no say in this really so don't blame her teachers, they aren't allowed to see the tests and only get a list of what standards may be on it, not how they will be tested or anything else that could help the teacher prepare the kids.

For SOME of the tests (Math and Reading) they get to take them up to 3 times, but it isn't the exact same test she's making that part up. For others (Social Studies and Science) they only get to take it once.

These tests btw are written by phd's who haven't been in a classroom in decades and are completely out of touch. For example last years 8th grade American History exam was evaluated to have been written at a college reading level. So imagine the teacher trying to prepare 8th grade public school kids for a college level exam that they don't even get to see before their kids take it

Was talking to my niece (no pics, she is 15) and she has finals next week. Her last day of school is in almost a month, may 25 or something. I asked what they did after finals until the last day, she said they get to retake finals- up to six times- until they get the grade they want.
I'm gonna say you are mistaken. You said her last day of school is May 25th and she goes to school in Texarkana.

Looking at the Texarkana student handbook, it says final exams are on May 22, May 23, May 24, and May 25.

Here is the link, page c-23:

https://www.txkisd.net/pdf/handbook/THS.pdf

So she can't be taking exams next week... exams are listed as the last 4 days of school at the end of May.

Also know that some professors at SELU allow retakes.

The only time I've seen this was in my physics class. We could take our tests and whatever we got wrong we could work the problems correctly afterwards and receive half credit. It really helped the grade and the understanding of it.
