I effed up big time today

So I've got a buddy, we'll call him Steve, who I've known for over 10 years. Well his wife (we'll call her Stacy) started working at the place I work about 2 weeks ago. She's a real cool chick and I've talked to her a few times in passing since she started here. Well this morning Steve came in to our office because he was picking Stacy up. I was talking to them before they left and all was going well until I noticed a good sized bruise on her neck. So I jokingly said something along the lines of "Hey, Steve isn't hitting you is he?" All of a sudden it got SUPER awkward. Her face turned blood red and Steve faked a chuckle and they hurried out. Then a few minutes later one of the other female employees came to my desk and told me that apparently it's well known that Steve does hit her 
Where the frick do I go from here? Apologize? Act like it never happened?
