Unless you are in 0.1% bracket that knows what you are doing, I can never understand people who go to a river boat every week to dump their weekly earnings into a slot machine.

Yes, it can be a fun thing to go and play blackjack or roulette maybe once a year or so, going in knowing the plan is to lose a set amount of money, you are there for fun and if somehow you don’t lose the money, then that’s just a cherry on top.

But beyond that, the math doesn’t make any sense

People pay for dopamine hits in all sorts of ways.

This particular one paid me thousands of dollars back in the day

The people sitting at the slots always look so happy.

But really…these people are addicted to the multiple tiny dopamine dumps.

Not much to understand.

It's an addiction, and like most addictions it's self inflicted. You don't just accidently get hooked on betting on everything from poker to what color socks someone famous will wear in a given day.

The strange thing is people actually make life impacting decisions based on odds what makers in vegas put out. Sad addiction indeed.

I am curious if casinos have taken a hit since the smartphone and social media came out. People don’t even need to leave the house to microdose dopamine now and it’s “free”

Just to clarify, there is nobody who "knows what they are doing" when it comes to slot machines. That is 100%, pure luck (or whatever is pre-determined by the machine to pay out).

I agree with you more in terms of skill games like poker or blackjack, where the player has more control over what happens.

Do they?

I admittedly don't visit a casino often, but when I do most people at the slots tend to be older and always look absolutely miserable as they push the button as fast as they can.

I remember the first time I went to a casino in Vegas. I was expecting something classy like I'd see in the movies. Instead I got dirty old women chain smoking in front of slot machines. I could have saved the trip and seen that at a gas station in Arcade, GA.

Maybe the set amount is the weekly check.

May have family on govt handouts so don't have worry bout lodging and food.

I tried to sign up once, but the site said it couldn't confirm my identity.

A good thing in retrospect due to my addictive personality.

I don't know why everyone doesn't understand the basic foolproof strategy: just double down until you win, then walk away.

It's mathematically sound.

Who has better odds of hitting?

A guy at a slot machine

Or

A guy at a strip club?

I don't do it because even if I only lose $20 I'll be pissed about throwing it away for the next two or three weeks. I'm cheap af.

Right. Like Roulette, or Pick a Number.

Throw in an 8 ball and you've got much better odds to hit the stripper's slots.

People like you that “don’t understand” are just quitters that stopped gambling before they hit the jackpot

Of course the math doesn't make sense. If you're gambling for profit you're doing it wrong, outside some very niche sports gambling where you can find an edge. Gambling at a casino should be considered spending money for entertainment and drinks, not trying to profit.
