Brisket was 70% of their grocery bill and was approaching $50/lb.

Buy on sale
We only buy stuff on sale. Luckily our sams club marks down their clearance meat by 25%. Still only buying mostly pork and chicken.

The only two that seem to be consistently packed is Chick-fil-A and Raising Canes.

People do not skip on meals (eating at a restaurant). Especially in the U.S.

In a GOOD month, a restaurant will net 10% of its sales as profit. That's 10% IF there's no significant food waste or spoilage, no e-coli outbreak, no equipment breakdowns, no building maintenance problems, no labor issues, a customer doesn't "slip and fall," etc.
Imagine if a walk-in refrigerator or freezer fails. Not only does the owner lose a significant amount of ingredients/inventory, but he also has to pay whatever it costs to repair or replace the cooler or freezer.
So on sales of $100,000, the owner makes $10,000 IF none of the above happens, and the problems I listed only scratch the surface.
For a while in the 80's & 90's, lots of athletes and/or famous coaches would buy or invest in restaurants. Every time I'd hear of, say, a Michael Jordan or Mike Ditka buying a restaurant, I'd tell my wife " he had NO IDEA what a potential money pit he's getting into."

Actually said this to my wife today

Accurate. It was money hand over fist for us for awhile. Now we are more in the normal part of the spectrum. Mom and pop places are just taking body shot after body shot right now. All while we get lectured about our prices but insurance is so damn bad. Thats what happens when it is cheaper to settle and we let idiots play the lottery for free. Crap like that just cannot keep happening

I've already switched to the DSA approved high protein bug diet

From what I see almost every restaurant in BR is packed every single evening. It appears folks here have plenty of income to spare.

Why go to a restaurant for that? Slop shite in a bucket at home.

the only mom and pop pizza place near me, been there 20 years and was always busy, had to close due to rising rent. The landlord wouldn't work with them. That spot has now been sitting vacant for at least 3 years. Dumbass landlord has now fricked himself out of about $150k minimum.
I would really be interested to know what the business strategy/thought process is behind this. I have to believe there is one and it’s not some kind of mass retardation event.

I don't see how the restaurant industry can survive in its current format
Restaurants dont even need a dining area to make doordash deliveries (which will be handled by robots as well obviously)
Posted on 9/25/26 at 8:26 am to theliontamer
People eat out or order delivery more nowadays. What used to be a special treat is nearly every meal out for a growing segment of population. Its shocking how some folks dont cook much at all.
Taxes arent higher. We are in a comparatively low tax era.
Some off yall just make up this sky is falling shite and then others echo it.
Always been a tough high failure business.

It's not higher taxes. I'm still all for bringing taxes down further and cutting government spending, fraud and waste.

Yep, same here. People say the economy is bad, but all the fast food joints, restaurants and coffee shops are packed all day.

Better when people paid in cash, and that income undeclared. Ahhh the good old days.
