It's hard to picture a 9-story tall wave but scientists say they measured one.

Hurricane Ivan, which struck U.S. shores September 15, 2004, kicked up the tallest, most extreme waves ever measured, scientists announced today.
The tallest measured wave was 91 feet (28 meters). The researchers believe they likely missed even larger waves because their sensors shut down before the most powerful region of the storm passed over them.
"If we had been fortunate enough to sample the waves when peak winds were overhead, we'd expect to have seen waves in excess of 130 feet [40 meters] from crest to trough," team member William Teague said.
At its peak intensity, the hurricane was a Category Five storm—the most powerful—with sustained winds of 161 miles an hour (259 kilometers an hour).
Hurricane Ivan tore a deadly path across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico in 2004. It struck the Gulf Coast on September 15 with 130 mile an hour (209 kilometer an hour) winds and was directly responsible for 92 deaths. But the extreme waves disintegrated in the choppy waters of the Gulf of Mexico, never making landfall.

I can't read through all the comments. Is the gulf coast out of the equation?
Nothing is guaranteed, but it seems to me that there would have to be some huge shakeups in the troughs over the US to send Irma into the Gulf.
That said, each little bump southward is not good...

The tidbit for this evening didn't upset me.

Currently panicking and may be stuck in Veiques for this fricking storm.
They wouldn't sell us tickets off of the island for tomorrow's ferry.

Degree of panic appropriate. Really hope you can get off the island tomorrow.

HMON wants to shatter record for deepest low recorded on Earth.
The HMON is a coupled model but they are running it uncoupled in the Atlantic. I wonder if that is causing issues with it bombing out storms? Regardless, Irma has high end potential as it moves through the Bahamas.

will they be selling them first thing in the morning?

Up the Chesapeake would be bad.

Supposedly.
Our friend that lives in here currently but from New Orleans went earlier to try to get us tickets. They wouldn't sell her, but then they sold some to the locals in line behind her.
First ferry out is at 6 so we'll be getting there at 5am to try and get tickets. Hoping for the best. If not I'm not sure what we're going to do. If they're only selling to locals, I'm screwed. And there aren't many resources on this island.

The calibrated 12z EPS basically showing a direct hit on Miami

the amount of destruction from the Hubba Bubba path would be devastating beyond words. esp if a cat 4 or 5.

Posted on 9/3/17 at 10:07 pm to Lazy But Talented
that is sad. they should not be protecting locals over all others. get a local to buy your tickets.

Eek. Would be rolling hot after all that warm water. Andrewesque impact all too possible.
ETA: With that potential, they be getting the ole Gulfstream up to take some measurements of the atmosphere to feed into the models.
