Gut feeling is it keeps trending west. I don't like that.

They are saying now that the eye is going to miss Savannah and go over Americus.

Irma's now been Cat 5 for 63 hours. That's 3rd all time. The record is 78 from the Cuba Hurricane in 1932.. The real record since we've been able to monitor with satellites and reconnoissance is 72 hours from Hurricane Allen in 1980.

Is there anyway it doesn't top 78 hours?

Actually, they're saying...

4. There is a chance of direct impacts in portions of Georgia,
South Carolina, and North Carolina, but it is too early to specify
the magnitude and location of these impacts.

So basically westward movement is still in charge ?

How does that CIMSS deal with the microwave imagery work? Where are they getting the images to make those animated gifs?
They use an algorithm that combines numerous data sources to produce that image. Microwave passes are infrequent to this process generates the smooth looking animation.

Update from a friend in St. John that we finally heard from today. Was really worried all night.
House is completely leveled and almost all possessions gone - thank goodness she didn't spend the night in it. Same for all of her friends who she lived near - houses gone. Entire island seems completely devastated.

Sorry. I was parroting the Savannah local news. They've started talking about where everyone is evacuating to.

Well, now much of north and east Alabama are in play for some rough weather from whatever is left from Irma. It'll be interesting how far inland she can stay a tropical storm.

It looks like it's got a shot to maintain strength the next 24 hours. It might weaken a little if Irma gets close to Cuba. The track keeps putting it closer to Cuba.

Thank you for explaining it.
