Same here. I can't understand the dropsonde readings or the graphs. I can understand the tracks; that's about it.
If you Google how to read those specific charts, then you will find a plethora of information on the subject.

The architect in me is curious to how Miami's high rises handle a direct hit, but I still don't wish it on anyone.
Based on a couple of hurricane experiences:
From Houston, several hurricanes ago, some damned building will have a gravel and asphalt roof and the heat of the sun will have evaporated a lot of the asphalt and the gravel will go flying and take out millions in glass. Likewise the decorative gravel used in landscaping:
Airborn and incoming.
From Katrina: massive glass panes on skyscrapers broken, and hotel draperies flapping in the breeze. A multistory condo blown over, on its side, but in tact. It may have been undermined. Also barges and gambling boats floated into neighborhoods and even onto highways, really cocking up travel (Mississippi Gulf Coast and also Eden Isles subdivision). Boats pulled off their moorings. Boats sunk where not tied to floating docks. Floating docks sunk with attached boats because they floated off their pilings. Bridge units (between pilings) floated away or far enough off center to collapse.

The correct pronunciation is Coburn...if using the traditional English/Scottish pronunciation.
Only the French pronounce the CK.

Recon supports a high end four from the last few passes I seen, 145 seems appropriate as it stands now. Wind field would appear to be expanding too with 100 mph winds out some 30 miles from center. Eyewall replacement appears to be taking tonight.

I just don't recall ever seeing a hurricane track like that before. Normally they blow out to sea but this goes inland

We had a few taller buildings in BR have windows blown out during Gustav, and plenty of roof damage as well, but most damage was due to falling trees.
Makes me wonder if it would be feasible to take a high-rise, and perforate it periodically so that it funnels high wind through to the other side, allowing the entire facade to act more like mesh and less like a sail.

For the last 6 hours it has moved at 286 degrees. WNW is 315 degrees. It is therefore much closer to moving due west than due WNW at this time. Forgive me for the concern, but I believe the track shifts west the longer this trend continues. If we were talking about a true WNW I wouldn't be pointing it out.
This motion basically eliminates a 2nd landfall in NC or SC based on cluster analysis of the blended 12z Euro EPS and 18z GEFS. However, that can obviously change with the overnight model runs.

Homestead, FL
I follow a podcast from some guys that live there. Really sad for them and Homestead which was decimated by Cat 5 Andrew in 1992.

Weakest the Dvorak has looked in days. I think she's down in four territory currently.
I don't put a lot of stock in the Dvorak technique. it has it's uses though.

Is your brother a former active duty marine? If so I know that dumbass. An old buddy from SOI is apparently planning to ride it out in key west according to Facebook.

For those who plan on staying during the hurricane and have a generator please go buy a rabbit ears antenna for your tv. You can get them at Walmart for $7 and when you lose power or cable hook up your tv to the generator and get local channels. You will be able to watch the news and see what's going on.
