Not rds, but the storm was having issues getting vertically stacked earlier today.
This dropsonde in the middle of the "eye" registered minimal winds at flight level but 39kt winds at sea level. That's a sign the mid level circulation and low level circulation aren't aligned.
IIRC, storms try to align these centers and one usually wins out over the other. If the mid level center is north of the low level center, it could pull the center of the storm towards it and result in a momentary northward trend. The storm would presumably continue on the NW bearing once it consolidates.

Watched a guy drown on West Beach in Gulf Shores about 5 Saturday night. He was only out up to below his knees. 40 family members with him for a reunion. It was his anniversary. Watching their grief was brutal. Everybody needs to stay out of the damn water.

No surfers. A few people walking the beach (we went once because we are beachfront) but there was a mass exodus yesterday. Very few people still here, couple LSU folks around us though.

In Gulf Shores all the local news stations are showing Soaps and Judge shows. I think we are in the clear. Just some gusty winds and rain. Waves are getting gnarly and the water is backing up into Little Lagoon. For reference I’m next to the Pass on West Beach.
lsumailman61. I have 2 places on Little Lagoon. Can you keep us updated on damage or water coming over the road in West beach?

Thx Slack I knew one of you would come through

You were in my front yard. I watched the whole thing unfold right in front of me. Got home from work and the responders were on the hoods of their trucks looking for him. By the time I got down to the beach they were pulling him out.

How did that happen?

And that had absolutely zero to do with this storm. If some dude can drown in a foot and a half of water, people that go out in even a minor storms surge are basically asking for it.

Rip current was crazy this past weekend. Heavy East winds.

My guess not a strong swimmer, got knocked over by a wave and got caught in a rip. Even though Rips don't pull you under people panic trying to swim against them and die from exhaustion/swallowing too much water. Always swim to the left or right or just let them pull you out past the sandbars. Human naturally rarely allows this but its how you handle them.

You can see it every few hours as the low level swirl jumps out in front of the convection. There's some south flow pulling the storms off to the N and E, so it's keeping it from getting stacked up properly. Not sure if the center will "jump" to align with the midlevels or just keep this game up of getting convection going, getting some western coverage and having it blown off NE.

For the life of me I can’t understand why things in NOLA are closing tomorrow, or even today perhaps. It’s sunhine right now and all indications are it’ll be sunny with a slight overcast tomorrow. Doesn’t make sense.
