So for Mandeville I'm looking at a little rain and a few wind gusts of about 30 mph, that about it?

That's pretty much it for anyone in LA outside of the Chandeleur Islands.

Might not even get gusts that high unless you get a band over you. Gradient of impacts is pretty steep for St. Tammany. Slidell will probably get some squally weather and a gust or two that might knock out power. More true the farther north you go from there. Looking west, the impacts greatly diminish with such a small and lopsided system. McComb will get worse weather than you in all likelihood.

I'm in Central Baldwin County AL, about 7 or so miles east of the bay. How am I looking?

That's a tougher question with you being to the east. You'll get a few inches of rain and it's a good bet you'll experience true tropical storm conditions. Winds pushing 40 mph with higher gusts is what I'd expect, though that might be a little aggressive given the size.

Prep like you might lose power for a day or two, but let's just say this isn't Ivan.

It's because seeing a hurricane rip in with the high winds is fricking cool.

The property damage and power outages get forgotten about.

And most people have boring lives and getting to jump into survival mode for a couple days excites them. Most of these types have only experienced moderately strong storms with little real damage.

Anyone who lived through an Andrew, Katrina, etc never wants to do it again

Don't let the sun fool you if you're Gulfport. Latest reports coming out as the effects from Gordon begin.

Jeff is legit retarded.

Leave it to a Polish storm chaser to do stupid shite like nearly getting himself killed in a car wash last year... not even a nice car wash either.

Jk, I’m Polish too and would be his sidekick YESTERDAY if he asked. I’m about to go to Dauphin Island and find him, then take it upon myself to just linger until shite gets too hairy for me to leave.

I just need him to work a blue shed into his motif somehow this year, it’s his claim to fame and he needs to strike while the iron is lukewarm

It's probably some of that, but the power of mother nature has always been a big draw. People gobble up natural disasters across the country. A hurricane is one of the few that you can discuss for days in advance, so the "wishcasting" can get out of hand.

New round of storms firing near the center with very little signs of shear in the cirrus pancake. Gordon might be trying to make one last run.

I've been close to the action for a couple of decent hurricanes, but inland enough where surge isn't going to get you. The sound of the wind is pretty awesome, and the rapid pace of the clouds. Max winds were Ivan and Katrina for me, which barely got to hurricane force.

Then the cleanup begins. Gotta cut trees out of the way to get out of the neighborhood. Get the debris out of the yard, make sure the roof is fine. All in the middle of summer with no AC for days. Only the radio to listen to for entertainment at night. Sucks and that's for a minimal hurricane for like an hour or two at worst.

Once you get up to Cat 2 conditions, it goes scary fast. Structural damage is a concern while the storm is raging. Anywhere near the coast and it can turn life or death rapidly. Recovery that takes months, not weeks. Nobody really wants to experience that.

In all seriousness just keep an eye on weather alerts. Possible tornados and flash flooding in that area. I’d try to be off the roads by 6pm. Lots of oak trees in the area and there will be debris all over. Plus lots of creeks that run all over Baldwin County. Doesn’t take much rain for roads to flood.

As a kid I always loved throwing the football right before the storm hits. For Ivan and Katrina it was like boomerang.

Radar presentation improving dramatically. Getting some storms wrapped around the western flank and maybe an "eye" type feature showing up at the end. Recon pulled a 1004 mb pressure recently, with winds in the 15 kt range. Radar tends to agree with the idea Gordon is getting stronger.
