A vast majority of homes most likes do not reside in a 100 year flood plain

Absolutely not. We evacuated to Ville Platte for Lili in 2002 and the eye was over us for a while. DURING THE EYE the men in the neighborhood were clearing trees from the road -- it was I think wednesday or Thursday and squirrel season opened that Saturday. Had to 1) have a way to get out and 2) clean up the mess so their wives wouldn't mind them leaving.

They need to quit adding categories to it then or create a new way to “rate” hurricanes for other factors other than simple wind speed. Wind isn’t even the major concern with a system. It makes no sense. This happens every year. People say “well it was only a cat 1” but it had the storm surge and rain bands of a cat 4.

The vast majority of people only pay attention to the category and base decisions on that. It doesn’t matter how much Canotre gets on TV and says do not pay attention to the category because wind is only a part of the danger, people still focus only on that category. Been that way since forever and every year it happens again. So if people only pay attention to the category, but the category isn’t a accurate measure of the danger, then change the frickin way you categorize these storms!

I know they have but people don’t hear that. They look at the category and wind speed because that’s how they rate these things and it’s clearly antiquated and doesn’t even accurately illustrate the true power of the storm.

Their cam went live just after daylight. The streetlights were on and a LEO was rolling around with his lights on. They had water in the streets but, at that time, the houses seemed to be a few feet above the water.

Un update would be cool.

What is the expected % given the geography of the state?

THey left that part out of course BUT I'd figure more than that. As concentrated as homes are on the coast, I'd assume that like here, if you have a mortgage you need flood insurance in the coastal areas but perhaps not.

Most of NC's population centers are inland, like Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, Winstom-Salem. Wilmington is the only large city on the coast. That said, rivers flood too as we all know too well.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast later today and tonight. Significant weakening is expected over the weekend and into early next week while Florence moves farther inland. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km). A wind gust to 105 mph (169 km/h) recently occurred at the Wilmington Airport, an Amateur Radio operator in Kirkland recently reported a wind gust to 98 mph (158 km/h), and a wind gust of 95 mph (153 km/h) was also recently reported by a Weatherflow private weather station at Federal Point.

I 100% understand where you are coming from and agree with you to an extent. But when you give folks the tools to empower themselves to make a difference in whether they live or die, the onus is placed on them.

If it is a hotel that was built within the past 10 years, it is probably cheap woodframe construction.
