Not much withstands Cat 4-5 surge on coastline.
Make sure that flood insurance is good to go.

They'll want to keep a flashlight or two, an axe, and rope in the attic. Id also suggest taking a look now at the chopping angle. It can be tough to get enough force in tight spots to cut through, so they should have an idea where they'll have the best angle to cut through or just have a chainsaw or something.
The rope obviously to tie themselves off as to not get swept away when on top of the roof. They need to legitimately plan for a roof escape.
One more thing: they should use a permanent ink marker and write on each thigh their full name, street address and next of kin contact information. That will greatly assist the coroner....

I feel like I’m listening to toddlers as they discuss a coastal home surviving this storm because it’s on stilts

No. Just have family in AL and MS on the coast.

Although the NAM is not a great model for the tropics, as Florence gets closer to the Carolinas, it may be useful to watch for short-term trends.
The 0Z NAM is a little SW of 18Z run and the same intensity through 45 hours.

My brother was a pharmacist during Rita in Lake Charles area. He said all employees had to do this. Scary times.

Does this thing turn enough to go to say Georgia without a chance for the to prepare?

Most obx houses are on stilts.

Hurricane Ike made the choice easy.

No. It's approach has it riding the edge of a ridge that'll push it toward NC. Most of SC could possibly catch it but a NC landfall is by far the most likely of options.

That's nuts. I know I've seen it on the news (Previous Hurricanes), but when you really look into it it's more than, "well , that sucks." Also, one of those things that you forget till it's back.

Yeah I think there’s several people in here who don’t know the difference between pilings and “stilts”
