The tunnel and the bridge are what takes him west from VA Beach.

Well frick me.

I don't know how you get out of Virginia Beach, but if you had to, you shouldn't need to go far inland.

If I was in SE Virginia and I COULD easily leave, I would. If there were extenuating circumstances, I'd hang around for another day and the path should be clearer. The NHC will come out with warnings tomorrow morning and you can decide from there.

10 feet of surge plus rain

and the wave height is on top of the surge, so 15' waves on a 10' surge is a lot of damn water...

, I've got a family member stationed there, but their fleet is currently out to sea, so I haven't worried about the logistics much.

You can go west via Norfolk and the tunnel or bridge or south towards Wilmington which is a bad idea. It’s going to be the bottleneck to end all bottlenecks gettin out. If the tunnel floods they’re FUBAR.

Looks like a bunch of people trying to get into Wilmington too.

Or, maybe, traffic.

I have a buddy in the Air Force and he lives in Newport News. The talk of potential 10 ft storm surge has him worried. He has asked me if he should stay or leave. Anyone with any knowledge on this?

Depends on where he is in NN. VA gov called for mandatory evac of Zone A, are there are several areas that are "zone A" in NN. We live in NN, *not* in zone A, so we are staying put unless something changes, but my kids had school cancelled due to mandatory evac. Your buddy needs to check his zone.

I’ve always wondered how an aircraft carrier would do in a storm like this.

Probably traffic coming home. Just saw Camp Lejeune schools are still on tomorrow. Used to live there. Did see however Topsail is mandatory evac.

I believe contraflow starts tomorrow morning.

Good rule of thumb - if they're reversing the highway in your area, you should probably leave.

How many old low major bridges do they have in North Carolina? Remember Ivan and Katria taking out lots of interstate bridges...

We’ve had several days of Gordon rain in NOVA and now this rain coming at us. My basement flooded Friday night. The ground is saturated here with no end in sight

Terrible situation all around. So many people (hopefully) trying to get out.

Do they have contra-flow in NC & VA? Now’s the time.

ETA: Slackster is a mind reader.
