interesting that they went up to 140 mph here and still didn't forecast cat 5
there's not much stopping it from continuing to intensify. sure the RI cycle has probably stopped for now, but it has nothing but time, hot water, good outflow, and no shear.

They are running a gyrocopter out there tonight, about 3:50 am. It is going to flit around a little, cause a general ruckus, then come on back in and give the official update.

close enough to potentially put the eyewall on land

don't focus on the center line, focus on the cone. there's still a lot of time and a lot of uncertainty with that turn. Anyone near that cone needs to prepare and be ready for impact by Sunday (Florida) or Monday (Georgia)

TWC twitter question from a viewer:
Safest place to be in your house in the middle of a Cat 5 hurricane

This thing may become an even bigger deal for Georgia/South Carolina, particularly if the center stays offshore.

Did you really reply to your own post, quote yourself and then credit yourself?

My concern is Tampa area, specifically Lakeland. Have some elderly family there.
I empathize with you. Advise your family to listen to local sober officials and not alarmists on the TWC.
This OT thread here is more practical than hyping heads.
Do the standard preparations ( water, food ready to eat, meds, etc)
Get a cell phone number or two or three from local neighbors or look online for local information there so you can check in. Also, you can probably monitor their area as well afar as being there. I’ve always liked Channel 13

Seems like the track is just going to continue shifting offshore. I'm starting to feel better about this now.

Model consensus definitely seems to be trending toward the center staying offshore.

TWC is probably sad to see these updated models.

It certainly could, but if the models pick up on something like stronger high pressure, then it might push further west before making the turn. Not that this is particularly likely, but things like that can happen and can result in drastic changes. People from Miami through the Carolinas definitely need to keep their guard up.

I’ll be spending tomorrow doing stuff like checking the generator, filling gas cans, and moving stuff that can fly inside.
