Wasn't there a thread a few weeks ago where people were losing their shite because Pope Francis said that humans are inherently good?
Might have been on the poliboard where people get riled up over everything.

We don't have to teach our children to be bad.

people are born inherently good and learn from the selfish actions of others to be more selfish
this is what i think as well.... "evil" actions are a learned response to one's environment, in response to survival instinct... whether it's stealing, killing, lying, etc, it's all about making one's situation more favorable to themselves in some way, shape, or form

The veneer of civilization is wafer thin.

inherently weak, fragile also curious, we make choices .
I think we fall on either side of good/evil not just when we make our choices but the responsibility we take for them

Robert Heinlein in his novel Starhip Troopers argued a person is born with no moral instinct. The base instinct is instinct to survive. The way humanity progressed to greater heights was by associating the benefit of the group/society at the individual's expense with the instinct to survive.
He also used it to explain why people become criminals; they associate what they do with ease and pleasure as the way to survive versus exercising higher virtues (that they likely were never taught).
An interesting take, though I think people are born wired differently. As in, some people are natural rule followers versus people who more readily buck the system, for instance.

I think we're in the middle baw. We do good things, we gotta kill to eat/survive. Some people are monsters, others saints. It's not binary like that

I think throughout human history it has been proven that humans do have the instinct that there are certain rules and expectations of our behavior and the way we treat each other that can either further society as a whole, or takes from it
Whether those standards are presented in the form of religion ,laws or traditions
history has shown what works and what doesn't

Humans are essentially tribal. The same evil person is good to his people but evil to you.

I think they have to be shown those values by their parents or they may not get with program.

Good and evil are entirely social constructs.
Humans simply are

I think Lord of the Flies got it right. More evil than good.

There was a co-op in Manhattan made of prominent artists and leftist activists. Their view was that kids were naturally good and were only corrupted by society and its constraints. Those kids murdered a kid just to see what it was like.
It was Manhattan's own version of Lord of the Flies.

Humans are chaotic neutral.
They will do what they want to serve their own purpose.
Sometimes that purpose might help another human and sometimes it might harm them.

We are driven to survive. Which means without laws, we would mostly kill each other off.
We pretend to be good.
