My stepbrother was bitten by a rattler a few months ago. Thing never rattled once. Just struck. He was life flighted to Temple, TX and spent a few days in ICU. Not fun.
I remember seeing a report once about a study that suggested rattlesnakes in areas of Texas with very large feral hog populations have actually started to "evolve" into refraining from rattling when someone/something approaches them.
That wouldn't be a good thing.

People are ridiculous about snakes.
Snakes are fricking good. Of course a bunch of dumbasses kill the snakes at first siting, yet wonder why there is an overpopulation of rats/rodents.
Most of the problem stems from religion and the view that the 'devil' was a snake, so they want to kill it regardless of it is is poisonous or not. Last time I checked, snakes in the US do not want to eat you and submit to your dominance. Backed into a corner and yes they will fight you, but what animal wouldn't? Bunch of pussies killing snakes to make them feel better.

So eastern diamondbacks are in MS now?

I run over at least 3 Rattlesnakes every summer on my driveway. The desert out around my house is full of them. Had a big one in my back yard last year. This year I found a huge skin from one...never found the snake so now I walk around my pool very carefully.

Yes, in the southeastern portion of the state.

What's this I hear about you being banned from the Pavilion at the Tarpon Rodeo?

Really? Well, too bad. If we are talking about a venomous snake and it's hanging around my house, "I insist".
Allowing venomous snakes to set up shop around the same space children frequent isn't a good idea.
Now if we are talking King Snakes, Rat Snakes, or any other non-venomous species, I'll leave them alone.

If you had ever worked on a farm that involved intensive irrigation of crops that attracted Cottonmouths like moths to a flame perhaps you would feel differently. I never kill non-venomous snakes but moccasins are a different story. They are born mad and while not as venomous as Rattlesnakes, they make up for it with their aggressiveness. The fact we share the same habitat means one of us has to go. I’ve heard of a few guys who have been bitten by these snakes while tending to irrigation water and it’s not something I want any part of.

The last close call I had was early season bowhunting, walking along a drainage ditch to get to my stand. I walked by a root ball from a tree that had blown over, and just as I passed it, I heard kind of a rattle.
I had stepped within a foot of a cottonmouth that was just on the other side of the root ball. It was shaking it's tail and hitting leaves with it. I went on and got in the tree, thinking the whole time about how I was about 1-1/2 miles from my truck when I damn near stepped on that snake, and that I probably wouldn't have made it back.
Ended up getting down, going home, and taking my wife to dinner. Screwed up my whole hunt.

I wear snake gaiters because of this.
If I'm at a compressor station, you have no chance of hearing a rattle anyways. If I'm on a regular location or having to walk off location in open range/tall grass, I walk extremely slow and careful. I never forget to put on my gaiters. Had a consultant get hit by one a few years back in the field. He's still got nerve damage from it. No thanks.
