I was bowhunting one evening in St. Francisville and at the end of the hunt I lowered my bow down and heard a noise. I just figured it was my bow but as I made my way down the tree in my climber I heard a rattle. Spent the night in the tree until clear light.

Many years ago I was bow hunting on about 50 acres of land in Tensas Parish and the land was crawling with canebrake rattlesnakes. I'm not scared of snakes as long as I can see them, but I was real jumpy walking into those woods because the snakes like to hide out underneath palmetto bushes and there was lots of those bushes on that land.

I, too, have heard one walking through the woods and had no clue where it was. I couldn't even tell what direction it was coming from.

That's when I found out that humans can actually fly. My feet didn't touch the ground I don't think as I fled the area

The only good rattlesnake is a dead rattlesnake.

Ouch! How’s the wound site healing? All I ever hear/read about is how awful the wound sits is cause of all the necrosing tissue.

It has been a slow process. He has had physical therapy which helped. Still a slight limp but way better now. Necrosed tissue is no joke.

Rattlesnakes in south TX no longer warn you. I have had so many close calls. (stepped on, next to, jumped over a few, etc....)

I read a theory that since so many people kill them on sight, not rattling is a survival adaptation.

This is true where feral hogs are present.

I heard that hogs are eating them by locating them when they rattle. Maybe a the ones that rattle get eaten and the non rattling ones are surviving.

My dad told me he saw a rattle snake on the edge of his cut lawn but it never rattled on him. Not good.

That makes sense. There are a lot of feral hogs and javalinas down here.

How in the actual frick is this news?

"Man walks through woods in deep south and hears rattlesnake, walks away."

What a polarizing headline. Thanks again Fox News for these hard hitting stories.

Scott and White does work.

my FiL is a farmer in West Texas and he's had numerous instances of the Rattlers not rattling when he approached. scary bizness. he has a lot of hogs, so it checks out.

ETA: i live in Temple and was out running some local trails with a friend and we climbed up this hella big hill. we normally take a break at the top but we pushed through. he was a few steps ahead and i plowed into him when he stopped suddenly.

beautiful 3.5 foot coral snake just chilling in the middle of the trail. they're way less aggressive and a neat creature. had to throw a few sticks in their direction to get them to clear out.

I shot one in the head with my bow, and I think it would have bled out eventually.

I got a long stick to poke it to get it to rattle. Then that mother fricker went to striking at the stick and I Sammy Sosa’ed his arse until he quit twitching. Still have the rattle. 13 rattles and a button

When I was about 12, I was in the woods searching for what I thought was a group of locusts on a tree. Looked down and realized I had been walking within 3 feet of a rattlesnake for about 20 seconds. Scared the frick outta me.

Years ago I was cutting some trails, dropped my machete to get a drink, reached down to pick up machete and holy chit there was a rattlesnake right between my feet. I could feel the blood draining from my face. lol

Snake didn't rattle one time.

i have 3 confirmed rattler kills. 1 by car, 1 by a .410 to the head because my kids and dogs were around, and 1 by screaming like a girl as i smashed it with a shovel blindly.

And all the people here reply with "OMG burn everything!"

Here's what happens when I come across a rattlesnake - I see it, say, "Cool, a rattlesnake!", take some photos, and carry on.

People are ridiculous about snakes. Don't step or put your hands where you can't see and there's a 99.999999% chance you'll never have an issue.

And this is why I don't bowhunt. Too hot and a crippling fear of snakes. Not going to fricking happen
