Metairie is the suburbs and will definitely be a car ride away from anywhere you want to be. Uptown off of St. Charles or Magazine would at least be walking distance and/or a street car ride from where you would want to be. Downtown would be right in the middle of it.
The issue is that New Orleans bad neighborhoods are frequently juxtaposed to the bad ones. There aren't really any areas that are all good or all bad for the most part. Metairie would probably be the least risky from that perspective.

Stayed in a great airbnb on Camp. Dude was a developer and had a bunch of houses up on the site.

I used it for a trip to NOLA about a month ago and it was great. It was a little apartment separate from a house that both shared a private courtyard with a locked gate in the French Quarter. It was about the same price as a hotel since I had 3 other people with me. They seem to have pretty honest reviews, too.

I only use Airbnb when traveling; over 20 different places in the past 3 years. Highly recommend it. Booking one tomorrow for NYC.

I know a guy with two a block off of St. Charles and one block off Napoleon. Nice places. I can shoot him an email and see if he has any open. He has another one right by the Fairgrounds, but it isn't as nice.

yup. places in europe are full places (750+ square feet) for less than $100 a night. you can't get that anywhere in the USA. it's absurd how high people ask for here.

I'd never want to do it with the person in the place, but a lot of people rent out entire homes/apartments/etc. where they're not present.

I noticed that too. A poster from the FDB rents out his home for LSU games, which is super nice, but I he gets a pretty penny doing it.

hmm..when I was looking at places to stay in Dublin I found Airbnb to be comparable in price to a hotel, much like here. Didn't seem particularly cheap to me.

It seems like AirBnB here is good for large groups wanting to rent out an entire apartment/house for a big event like a reunion, a football game, or a bachelor(ette) party. Definitely doesn't seem to be the option for "cheap" staying.
If you're willing to go so cheap that you'll stay in a spare room in someone's home, you can probably do blind booking and get a 3-star or above hotel for the same price.

You can charge what the market is willing to pay. We have a place on Airbnb, one bedroom, kitchen, living room, porch and bathroom. Two blocks from the beach. During the summer season we can get $300 night from 4th of July through the end is summer. We had two empty nights in three months after listing it. Now we have a full time winter tenant paying normal rent, but she will be out by the summer. Our neighbor rents out her place for 600 a night at least and always has people in it. But it has 4 bedrooms

In both Madrid and Lisbon this summer it was at least 20 euros cheaper than a 3 star level hotel and you get more space.

I've had great experiences with it. SO and I don't mind if the host is there. The people we've met have been pretty cool. We've never been hosted by a dude though. It may be irrational, but we're both uncomfortable with that.
Every time we've used it its been much cheaper than even pretty crappy hotels in the area.

Air BnB is awesome, just pay attention to the parameters of the accommodation (do you have your own room, is it a full apartment, can you get in late, does the host have rules, etc).
Also, make sure your host has good ratings. The user rating system is the quality/safety control.

Undoubtedly, they'll rape you with plenty of affordable options and murder you with a wider range of locations than hotels.
