I've used in CO Springs, Dallas, Portland, and Chicago. Have gotten good deals and the people were nice. Just read the reviews and make sure there is a good sample size too

Just got back from a 3 week stay in LA and used vrbo.com. It was the 2nd time we went through them and I wasn't uneasy at all. We had a 3br 2ba in the hollywood hills and we negotiated it down to $2100 for the entire stay.
Like others have said, read reviews. And don't book a place that doesnt have any.

I had a pretty good experience renting out a house in Galveston when I had to go to a wedding earlier this year.

Really it makes my girlfriend uncomfortable. She doesn't want to be alone with some random dude if I have to run out or something.
If I was traveling by myself or with friends it wouldn't bother me.
I do know someone who stayed at a place in LA, and when she showed up there the guy answered the door with a giant pet boa constrictor around his neck.

I recognize your first two links. First one is a new apartment complex that is very nice. The second is on St Joseph's and Magazine. Both great areas in the WHD
I frequently use Airbnb, VRBO and rent a whole unit/house when traveling and now prefer it over hotels. Definitely takes longer to find a suitable place, but is usually the same price or cheaper than hotel and provides a unique experience
