It's really simple. You want to do everything you can to put the officer at ease.

1. Turn off the engine.
2. Roll all windows down so they have visibility and know there isn't anyone in the back of the car who can harm them.
3. Put your hands on the steering wheel and leave them there.
4. When they approach you and you are carrying a licensed gun, tell them you have a licensed weapon and where it is stored.

Twice stopped and Imtold them I was armed, have a CC license, and the location of my pistol.

One told his partner and then looked at my carry license. He then said that’s fine and asked me about registration and then I was on my way.

The other time the officer was alone and just said that was fine and asked me about my CREE backup lights under my bumper. Since they were wired for only reverse,
He said ok and I was on my way.

I’d never tell a person to handle it a certain way because I have no idea how some of these dumb arse, power tripping cops will act. And that’s just the sad reality. Departments are losing funding, losing applicants, and losing the threashold of what they’ll hire.

IF I was a cop and a person told me I’d just ask Where it is, ask not to reach for it, and ask if it’s legally owned. After that idgaf unless the guy gives me reason to be paranoid about him

2. Just show it to him or whatever. It's cool

In Louisiana, if you are a CCW holder you are required as part of your agreement with the State for that license, to inform any officers that are operating in an official capacity, that you are in possession of a firearm when you are detained or arrested. Otherwise you risk forfeiture of your CCW.*

If you open carry, I assume you're not obligated to inform the officer.

I assume it helps that I'm white, in a decent vehicle and am usually business casual. Not making a joke, I really think it probably is a different world.

Wait until he is almost to your window. Then roll down the window and say "What do you want me to do with the gun?"

Similar story to the guy who got shot on his hands and knees begging for his life. Interesting how the quality of instructions can take or keep lives.

So I guess none of the whites have seen the video of the cop asking the black man at the gas station to show him is ID, then when the black guy reaches into his back pocket to get his wallet, the cop shoots him. Black privileged right?

I hand the officer my license and my carry permit. He/she asks if I have it and where it is. Simple.

I exit my vehicle with my hands in plain sight while the officer is still safely in his vehicle. When he directs me to re-enter my vehicle, I advise that I have a legal firearm with reaching distance of the driver seat and ask how he wishes me to secure the weapon?

I defer to him, but generally do not allow him to seize or take possession of my weapon. Nor do I allow him to enter my vehicle. Usually he will observe me clear the weapon and secure it in a glove box.

/thread!

Got pulled over a month ago for speeding. 35 in a 20. Before even reaching for my license told cop I was carrying and asked if he wanted to disarm me. He asked if I had a CHL, I do. He said no worries you aren't the guy I am worried about. We briefly chatted, he wrote my ticket, we thanked each other and went on our day.

Probably didnt' get shot because I am white. But the officer was named Pedro and Messican looking.

That is correct. Obviously, he will probably see it anyway. Or at least you better hope so, otherwise that means you likely have it adequately concealed to be in violation of illegal carrying of weapons R.S. because if you do have a CCW you have a duty to inform.

IOW, you never are legally required in the State of LA to inform an officer that you possess a weapon unless you have a concealed carry license. So while informing is optional in LA I contend that more harm is potentially done than good if you exercise your option to inform.

One more caveat. Be sure to differentiate in your mind, "possessing" from "concealing". No matter what, no one(well, I think except current/former judges, LEOs and members of State legislature) in LA can conceal a weapon without a CCW. When I speak about informing while possessing, Im talking specifically about open carry or carrying inside vehicles, home, place of business, etc. As far as carrying in backpacks, strollers, etc. being considered "concealed on your person", Im not really sure about that and its been a question Ive wondered for years and have never got an answer for. Im going to just assume they enjoy the confusion surrounding that specific detail as it allows them more discretion, ie. unequal enforcement. Which is unAmerican.

Fake news. You don't have to tell cops shite unless you are concealed carrying in Louisiana... Want to know how you get shot? Telling a cop you got a gun under your seat/ in console and he misreads your movement.

or you don't tell the cop shite and you reach in a glove compartment for registration and he sees a firearm.
