As two Atlanta police officers face numerous, well deserved charges for murdering a black man that was doing nothing more than sleeping in his car....it’s important to remember to accept white privilege as a reality and to teach your kids about it.
This story was posted by ABC Tampa this morning.
Some bullet points:
Most adults are too stupid to understand it:
Being uncomfortable with this topic is evidence of white privilege.
Whites never suffer because of their skin color.
Even if you earned it, it really happened because you are white.
Whites are born with everything they need. Blacks are not:
Not allocating 50% of shelf space to products used exclusively by 16% or the population is evidence of white privilege:
Definitely bring race politics into your home and talk about it at dinner.

Yet teaching our kids about concepts like white privilege can be daunting. It’s not a concept that even adults can always grasp, so we might balk at confronting this topic with our children.
Being uncomfortable with this topic is evidence of white privilege.
quote:
Black parents don’t have the luxury of not discussing white privilege with their children. Refusing to discuss white privilege with our children because it makes us uncomfortable is in and of itself a white privilege.
Whites never suffer because of their skin color.
quote:
It does not mean we haven’t suffered — but it does mean our skin color will never be a source of our suffering.
Even if you earned it, it really happened because you are white.

As a story at Teaching Tolerance notes, “white privilege is not the assumption that everything a white person has accomplished is unearned; most white people who have reached a high level of success worked extremely hard to get there. Instead, white privilege should be viewed as a built-in advantage, separate from one’s level of income or effort.”
Whites are born with everything they need. Blacks are not:
quote:
Get two backpacks. Fill one with snacks, books, coloring pencils, paper, a flashlight, a bottle of water, and maybe even a stuffed animal or blankie. Leave the other backpack empty. Explain to your children that a white person in this country begins life with the filled backpack

For example, when shopping in the beauty aisle, we might point out the plethora of white hair care products, whereas Black hair care products are often shoved into one small corner, and just a few options are available
Definitely bring race politics into your home and talk about it at dinner.

The Anti-Racist Checklist for Whites by Dr. John Raible is another great way to help us continue to deepen our conversation about white privilege with our kids. We can hang it on our fridge as a visual reminder that could help spark conversations with our kids around the dinner table.

I wish the guilty whities would go full Jonestown and show us just how pious they really are

The poorest of the poor living out in Appalachia are born with this backpack as well.

The best way to talk to them about white privilege is sign them up to the KKK. You’ll have people in there like Spleen and Magildachunks but that’s ok

Not true. His wife's boyfriend helps too.
(They're really his wife's boyfriend's kids but he doesn't know)

Here's how it goes down in my family.

I'm not sure why people feel guilty about it, but it absolutely exists.
There is an inherent advantage to looking like the majority of the population. Doesn't mean you have to apologize for it, nor does it mean you should stick you head in the sand and act like it's not true.

White priveleged folks should pay attention to the fact that ABC, ESPN, and Disney are all one and the same company.

I'll tell them about the guy who beat me out for Valedictorian in my high school class. Sure he had a 4.0, but they let him switch from Calculus to some other class mid year when it was apparent he wasn't going to make an A. That was against school policy.
That disqualified me from many scholarship opportunities. I had a 32 on the ACT. He had something in the mid 20s, but he got a full ride to Tulane because he came from a disadvantaged community. Nevermind that his parents made more money than mine, and he lived in a little nicer house. His skin color got him something that mine couldn't get me. That is my first hand experience with white privilege.

White “privilege” is how white people never have to use skin color as a crutch or an excuse for not taking responsibility for their own actions.

Why does it give you an inherent advantage?

To be clear - the wealthy Disney star living out in Hollywood that was harassing kids in Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and Iowa over inappropriate social media posts....she understands that those kids were privileged. They aren’t stuck in a shitty household where racism is open and acceptable. They are just privileged.

Recently had this discussion with some of my kids. They realize that what they have and who we are as a family isn't because they're white. It's because their parents worked their asses off for 27 years providing for them and making sure they were raised with morals and confidence. To think they are who they are, or have the opportunities they have, because they are white is a slap in my face.
The privilege word is disrespectful, period. With that said, I agree that black kids do have some hurdles that white kids typically don't. They way police approach them if pulling them over, store owners watching them for theft, etc. Those things really do exist unfortunately. I don't think white people are privileged because they don't have to deal with that as much. That's what should be considered normal, not privileged. Blacks deserve to have that same level of normalcy.
