How to confuse a conveniece store clerk !

So I need to put a little air in a trailer tire(not my house)and the machine costs $1.50 in quarters.
I go in the store, buy something for $3.85, hand Ms Thang a $20.00 and ask her to give me two dollars in quarters in my change
You'd thought I had asked her to solve the Riemann Hypothesis

If that register doesn't tell them exactly what to do, then they are fricked.

Which one of you paid $1.50 for air?

I also don’t know what the reimmann hypothesis is. I take this as an insult to me.

Some gas stations have complimentary pressurized air.

And with this I always recall going to small Mom and Pop stores in Japan where the clerk would be able to tally up your purchases on a calculator and assist you in the yen monetary exchange.

If there's no line and I've got cash I'll let my first grader pay then ask him how much change he should get back. Usually they're just nice and encourage him
but occasionally the clerk seems genuinely shocked & amazed that a child can do simple math without the register giving him the solution. A couple of times I've left feeling bad for the clerk because they had a look like they might not have been able to do that themselves.

Gas station near my house offers free air

I have special tires that require at least 70% nitrogen in them

When I was 18 and working at a mom and pop restaurant the boss forced any new person to learn to count down peoples change and get fast at it before he would allow anybody to let the register do it for them. When it was really busy and there was a long line it was faster to do it in your head than to type in the amount they gave you on the register. There were also times when the POS would stop working and if we had people like in the OP then we wouldn't have been able to run the business til it was back.
If somebody is still operating a cash register for a living past their mid-20s at the latest then counting change should be required learning. Its basic math.

Mine offers free non-pressurized but charges to pressure it. I need to move.

Well, cash register skills are a prime part of the modern adult world.

She’s probably not smart, but I remember when I was in high school I had a job where I worked a cash register.
Since he machine tells you exactly how much change to give, you spend the day mindlessly handing out change.
So when someone throws you a curve ball with the change, it’s like alarm bells start going off like shite, I gotta turn my brain on now. And it takes a second to process it. Then you start not wanting to look like an idiot, and it puts more pressure to come up with the right change.
If the machine didn’t tell us what change to give and you go in knowing you were going to use your brain, it’s not a big deal. But having to switch your brain back on after mindlessly letting the machine do it for you all day, it takes a second to process it.

I wish I could get $1.50 for every time I have produced a little air pressure. I would be in Warren Buffet territory, financially.

I agree. The math itself isn’t complicated but getting your brain in gear to do it could be challenging. If they did it for five customers in a row it wouldn’t even be an issue
