I work in a manufacturing facility and can tell you that the guys that work for me struggle to make ends meet. Because if the market we are in, we can only pay so much. My guys come to work everyday and do their jobs the best they can and they still struggle. I'm not sure how some of them make it on what they get paid.

My first job was in a sheet metal shop. The starting pay was $3.10 an hour, most of the guys lived in a house they shared. I was going to college at the time so it wasn't something I was living on.

There’s a reason they’re poor... they are stupid, incompetent people

remember late 2005 they started reporting we were in a recession when we weren't(yet)?

then they pushed it HARD. every news clip, every show, article etc. talked about our recession that hadn't hit yet. then when it did, we had to "abandon free market principles to save the free market." -GWB

massive bailouts. no one went to jail that should've, and now we've had interest rates held next to zero for a decade, while "printing" trillions of dollars.

fed chairmen and a lot of contemporary economists will tell you the economy relies on perception. if we think it's strong, the wall street casino numbers look fabulous. but the moment enough people freak out, it's all over. there's a big one coming, and just like before they'll blame the free market and take more control (read: liberty) away from you.

So once she’s finished with her college classes, she should be able to get a better job right? Sounds like she’s on the right track.

Or was she expecting life to be easy and not have to work at it?

If you’re on Twitter you’ll see a lot of viral tweets talking about “this economy” or “this job market”.
Good luck in a couple years fam.

Broke people with Apple watches and nice houses.

Bad times indeed.

THIS is what the article is about. Republicans want the economy and people to support themselves. The Democrats want the government to run everything. One of these systems is sustainable and the other is not.

That's the entire concept. To scare poor people and allow the State to take more control of the economy.

I read another article linked about state legislatures pre-empting local minimum wage increases.

quote:

Douglas, the McDonald’s worker in St. Louis, is the sole breadwinner in her family. At 61, she’s supporting her eldest son, who is recovering from a brain tumor; her youngest son, who has autism; and her brother, who is disabled. Each weekday morning, she catches two buses and a train to work because she cannot afford a car.

“Anybody who gets up and goes to work every day should be able to earn a living wage to take care of their families and pay their bills,” said Douglas, who began working at age 12 in her parents’ janitorial business. “I’m not asking for a handout. I’m saying just give me my due.”

In what fantasy world can a 60 year old burger flipper support 3 middle-aged+ disabled men, plus herself?

Yep, that house looks nicer than anything most of my generation grew up in.

Travel to a third world country and see how their “poor” live and the differences are amazing. When the “poor” in the USA have at least one car, a house, AC, cable, SNAP, appliances, and $200 shoes, then all this talk of the poor in the USA is all just a politically driven agenda.

Chinese farmers live in squalor with no electricity, no running water, no transportation and no welfare system to act as a safety net. They still carry buckets of water to fields by hand and are lucky to share a bicycle with another farmer who lives in the same compound. If I’m going to be poor, it better be in the good ol USA!

sounds like really bad genetics

We should explore the idea of telling some people they should not have kids

The useful dullards in this article will happily vote for any politician who agrees to take your money and give it to them.

Our poor have never had it so good.

I'm always amazing at the frivolous spending the poors do on a daily basis. Go out to eat and pay ~10 per shitty meal or pack a decent $2-3 lunch. Stop at a gas station for 2gallons of gas?, better go inside and buy $8 of shite snacks and a sugar drink. On and on...

Not saying being more fugal is going to make these people wealthy, but if they were even a bit more wise with their money they'd at least have some savings.

I've about decided that people are just destine to make bad decisions. Give them the opportunity to make good ones, sure, but don't lose sleep when some of them constantly thwart those opportunities to instead make bad choices. It's just what some humans do.
