My girl wants yellow gold, the jeweler told me I could go with a less perfect clarity and most wouldn't notice do the color of the metal.
Any opinions on that?

True and false. The gold will hide the color under some light. But if super bright it'll look like shite.

Truth
Women are super materialistic and in some arms race with other women. It's up to the men to be adults and squash this shite.

Get a good one piece center stone of a carat and some little ones to enhance it.
Like the other poster said 3 carats of tiny stones has no value. They don't buy back anything less than 0.25 carat.

Am I suppose to tell her how much I spent?

That's funny Baw. She will know how much you spent when she goes through your phone and wallet. You will have the receipt in your wallet, and mention in a text how much you spent, to a friend.
I bought mine when the diamond merchants only demanded two months salary. I wonder when they will kick it to four? I was making $25k in 1991 and spent a little over $4k for a flawless 1.06c. Prices and demands have escalated.

just go to a store that will buy a specific diamond for you, then mount it how you want it. You'll save a ton.

My buddies all seem to be going for three stone rings, but they are spending some serious money.
Is this the new normal?
If you spend more than $3500 on a ring, you're stupid.
If you marry a chick who is mad b/c you won't spend more than $3500 on a ring, you're stupid.

I'm not spending anything
But I'd raise that to 9k or so for a 100k salary.

Clarity over carat. But the real answer is, spend a little time researching, buy something you can afford and if the bitch doesn’t like it, re-evaluate your commitment to her bc that’s a red flag. My fiancé would rather us not be in debt than to have some exorbitant ring. Not to mention, the ring itself shouldn’t be the thing saying you care for her.

The three month salary thing is a joke
No way I’m spending 3 months of salary on a god damn ring
Us men are fricking ourselves

Cut has the biggest impact on sparkle. There are plenty of stones in the SI range that are “eye clean” in that you can’t spot inclusions unless you’re looking with a loupe, or the inclusion is hidden under a prong. If the cut is bad, even the cleanest stone will look dull.

If you think the cost of an engagement ring should directly correlate to your salary, you're stupid*.
*unless you're a multi-millionaire by the time you're getting engaged. Then buy whatever you want but chances are you make $250k or less and $3500 cap still applies.

Think about what you’re asking . . . the jeweler trying to sell you the diamond with less than perfect clarity is like a used car salesman trying to sell you a car and telling you not to worry about the strange noise the engine makes because the body is in great shape.

Clarity over carat.
For sure. If you buy a large diamond of shitty quality, it will be more noticeable.
Also, agree about buying something you can afford. Only an idiot would put themselves in debt by buying a diamond. At the same time, it should be a bit of a sacrifice, IMO. Guys who balk at spending 5k on a diamond for their SO, but pay a 1k car note have fricked up priorities.
I went with ~1.5 carat high quality, solitaire, pear shaped. Large enough, but not gaudy.
