Supposedly divorce rates go up for couples who spend over X amount on a wedding (x being somewhere around 10K IIRC).

$16k, another $8k for the honeymoon. I think we got a really good value, for a wedding. Oddly enough, we received 175 RSVPs, but ended up with about 225 friends and family. Usually the other way around, but the venue didn't charge us extra, which I thought was mighty nice of them.

I will say this to any prospective OTers looking to get married... If you are going to have a wedding, the most important thing you can get is a wedding bitch. It was a $300 add-on, and what she did was tell us when it was time to do the different parts of the wedding (which was agreed upon before), got food and drinks for us, ran off people who wanted to congratulate us, and took care of shite that came up. And secondly, don't do the trashy shite and bypass your wedding and reception. Eloping is one thing, but throw a damn party. Nothing screams -I'm embarrassed about what my life has become- like going to a justice of the peace. Have some damn pride.

Does that factor in inflation?

I like the idea of the bride buying a watch for the groom. and when I say watch, I'm talking something at least comparable to her engagement ring in price.

I keep trying to pitch this to my wife

ETA: It doesn't even need to be the same price as the engagement ring, I'll take a watch at half the price of her ring.

People with poor parents. Couples in their 30s that are just now getting married that don't think it's appropriate to still be taking handouts from their parents because their parents just retired and are now on fixed incomes.
it's not a handout when it's what you're supposed to do.

I won't argue that at all. A lot of them are. Ours was not anything fancy which is sad to say given what they spent.

But like I said, I don't regret it. I got to see my 84 year old grandparents, who were on their 63rd year of marriage, party the frick down. They never left the dance floor and the next day my grandmother said she couldn't remember the last time she danced that much and had so much fun. She said that was probably her last hoorah and couldn't stop thanking us for such a good time. Turns out she was right because her health turned not long after. I'd spend 25k of my own money to give them that again.

I think our wedding was somewhere around $30-35k total. My wife's parents paid for it all minus limos and rehearsal dinner which my parents covered. That doesn't include our honeymoon which was 4-5k...

Wife and I were both in our 40's so we were past the "look at me I'm getting married stage. Both our Fathers had already died and we didn't want to burden our Moms so we did it about as small as you can. Marriage license was $35 and I bought the minister a case of Michelob. Maid of Honor was the 4 year-old daughter of the Best Man who was the SIL of the minister. Total attendance--5. Right for us but not for everybody, I know.

early 40's.
Out of my circle of my 15 to 20 closest friends only one is divorced. His second wedding was better than his first so it's all good.

FWIW I think the marriage longevity:wedding cost thing I posted above is more about the type of people who place value on elaborate weddings. Your style seems to win

I know several couples that are in their 40's and 50's who are married and were never divorced. Do you think this is rare or something?
