re: How much was your wedding?

Small ... probably 100 people. I think it was like 6K and perfect. At the time I wanted bigger, circumstances didn't allow for it. Now 24+ years later, who the hell cares? Actually didn't really matter back then either ... it's all about the purpose.

i would have seriously had to reconsider my desire to marry this person at that point...

If could have pocketed the cash, I'd be perfectly fine walking around telling everyone we were married without ever actually doing it (not that you need to spend a ton of money). It totally wasn't worth it. Did I have fun? Of course. Did everyone else seem to enjoy it? Of course. But I'd still take the money.
Apparently you get down voted if you spend any money on your wedding, but I didn't pay for anything and only thing that was up to me was the song we danced to. I know it was north of 30k and we didn't have a big wedding. Does not include rehearsal or honeymoon or anything. Although we cheaped out on the honeymoon.

And in hind-sight, do you both still feel it was worth it, or wish you spent more?
If you are a male. No.
If you are a female. Yes, but you wish you had more.

What if you make plenty of money? If I was pulling in $200k+ as a male and the bride's father offered me $15k or for his daughter to have the wedding she wants, I'd let her have it too. Not everyone needs the money from Mom and Dad and maybe they don't want to drain their own banks on the wedding when Mom and Dad are willing to pay for it.

FIL offered us money rather than a wedding and we both refused. We can always earn money, the memory of our wedding is priceless (or worth way more than the amount spent on it

Same.

No idea how much FIL spent, but I can tell you it was definitely OT baller status. Typical French Quarter/ Cathedral wedding with all the bells and whistles. It was a good time.

is there a parallel this early in the relationship where the guy allowed $25k for something 'he wants'?
should every couple be given $50k to blow so they can impress their friends with their fairytale happily-ever-after gigantic wedding?
maybe the guy can spend his 1/2 of the money on hookers and blow

Don't regret my decision for a minute. She wanted a wedding and her parents were paying so it didn't cost me a dime.
15k would've been great but I wasn't and still am not hurting for the money. Plus she's tighter than dicks hat band when it comes to money so I've probably save way more than that by marrying her as opposed to most other women.

The ceremony was $100, but the JoP that married us was also the manager at a local bar&grill. So, he made the mistake of giving us free drinks that night. The wife and I took down well over $100 in free booze.
We wouldn't have done it any other way.

No, but your wife's wedding set was probably more expensive than your wedding band, too. Life isn't fair and neither are weddings

i'm 49 and every single couple i went to school with or have met in my personal or work life that is around my age is divorced.
yeah i'm cynical as hell but i see a wedding as the ultimate attention-whoring for everyone else's acceptance of you as a couple when at the end of the day, that should be about you and your wife.

This is what gets me. It's all about one-upping her friends. And when some of the friends have legit money, it get's stupid. I'd say we had one of the cheaper weddings, although it was very nice.
I know one of her friends comes from money and the wedding was very very over the top. Well over 100k.
But then she'll have another friend who by no means comes from money throwing a 70k wedding while having student loans just to keep up

Most of the decisions for ours were made by both our parents.

I'd try to convince my SO that, that money would be better used as a down payment on a baller house. Or to buy a nice new car. Something more to show for that $ other than a hangover, video, and pictures. The FIL planned on "throwing away" that money anyway.

That's just stupid

I like the idea of the bride buying a watch for the groom. and when I say watch, I'm talking something at least comparable to her engagement ring in price.

My wedding was awesome. Having done it, I can now say with the benefit of hindsight wouldn't take any amount of money to not have experienced it.
You may not feel that way, but I do.

Probably around 17-20k after everything (including bachelor parties and all the small shite)
We tried out best to keep the costs down while doing something we were proud of. We cut costs where we could on things that weren't important to us.
Our wedding cake was from publix.
