Not even $5 an hour gross.

I'd pass. Depends on what your ultimate upside where you're at is.

Now, if they pay mileage or car expenses, I might consider it.

That would come to just shy of $9300 according to the federal mileage rates

Really according to google maps it says 51 minute commute I had hour and half anticipating traffic.

I guess I should have been more clear, this would be the dealbreaker for me. I could probably deal with an hour and a half commute if I wasn't having to deal with stop and go. Having to completely focus on the car in front of you the entire time is going to make that drive drag by vs just smooth interstate where you can zone out a bit.

I drive both I-12 and I-59 pretty often. 12 is a minefield of brake lights where my knuckles are clinched the whole time. 59 is smooth sailing. I spend about the same time on each during this trip, but the stretch that's on 12 feels like 4 hours and the 59 bit is over before I know it.

I would be I-10 most of the way, at least till government street exit. Would take me 10 minutes to get to interstate and 10 minutes when I get off.

Sounds like you're trying to find a reason to take the job? There's more to it than just money and commute time, if the other points are good enough then go for it. Gonzales isn't exactly Mecca, what's stopping you from taking the job and getting a house in Zachary?

Don't you teach? If this is a public school in North BR, a $9k raise even without the extra commute isn't worth it.

The benefits are one reason they are better than what I have now. The money is better short term. Main issues I have is the days I get caught in traffic

How much is another 8% of your life worth.

Or 12.5% of your time awake assuming you sleep 8 hrs a night.

It better be worth it IMO.

Looking at 8-3 going from Gonzales to North Baton Rouge and an extra 9k a year. Did the gas figures for what I pay now and I will go up 800 more a year.

I would basically count those extra hours as "work hours", so I would need at least what my hourly would breakdown X the number of days a year of be traveling.

9k wouldn't cut it IMO.

is moving an option? think about not only about your commute time, but miles on a vehicle (if you drive), time that you could be doing other thinks. years ago I had a hour commute to work each way and I absolutely hated it.

Round trip is already pushing 70 miles, so adding 80 to that would require at least me clearing 300k after taxes at a minimum.

I love driving. I have no problem making constant trips now for my job. I'd take an extra 30k a year

I drive an hour to and from work. Driving to I don't mind. Can listen to book on tape, plan, think, etc. Drive home sucks because you want to relax. Don't want to do forever, but not that bad....and the pay is worth it.

I drove an hour to work and back for 4 years, got a new job and moved literally across the street. Office is less than 200 yards from my front door and it's the greatest decision I ever made. frick commuting, my coworker drives from past Nola to BR every day and back, puts 35k a year on her car. Fridays it takes her up to 2.5 hours to get home, frick that shite.

I'd figure out how much I'm making per hour after tax at my current job. Then mentally subtract that amount from the new gig before comparing anything else.

If you're salaried, just divide your regular paycheck by the average hours worked.

It won't be an exact comparison but will get you in the ballpark. Basically think of it as being paid to commute more.

I drive to Broussard every day. It's 70 minutes one way, but not as bad as you think. Mostly interstate so I'm rolling. The MRB may be more of a problem than you think (if you're coming in from the west). The commute isn't bad. I enjoy my job and have no regrets.

$40k more, give or take. Part of it for the hassle of the extra drive, and the rest for the extra $1k or however much it'll cost monthly for a Tesla, which would be a must.

I know this isn't part of the topic, but I'd also have to have an assurance to leave early enough, say 4p at the latest. If it had to be later, I'd need major pay bumps over $40k as that would mean less time with my kids. And obviously if it's late enough and I'm seeing my kids less than 1-2 hours per day, there's no amount I'd take(that's me playing the OP game which assumes I can't just move closer to the new job)

fwiw....Im convinced "Commuting" took years off my life. Minumum 2 hours a day on beltway in Houston became the worst 2 hours of my life after a few years. Literally quit a very good job over it.
