Houston beats N.O. In another category. No surprises here.

those seem pretty low for "comfortable" living in those cities

Yeah I've lived in the Bay Area, I think $119,570 would be about half of what you'd need to live "comfortably".

120k would have you living more than comfortable as a single male. You would be loving it.

6k a month take home pay

3k place to yourself in Russian hill

That leaves you 3,000 more

150 cable
75 cell phone
350 car note
100 car insurance
400 a month grocery

That leaves you 2k left over

Spend a 1,000 a month on partying and you are still saving 1,000 a month

I am starting to think this website is people who dont work yet

I'm not going to argue with you. Everyone lives their lives differently.

My experience was that even with the $200K+ I envision in my scenario, it would be tough to live the way I lived back then with my then-fiancee and still save for house like we were doing.

And the money you have to spend for parking in SF is outrageous.

This is true. You have to plan properly. There are ways to beat the system

Noe Valley was literally the only place she would have been happy buying a house. That was her dream...she was born and raised in SF.

After living with her in the Ocean Beach area, I could understand why. The temp would climb and the sky would clear up driving five minutes in any direction.

I have a two bedroom two bath apartment in an insanely safe section of the east, and bring home around 48 a year and I'm doing fine.

That's living like a poor. I spend probably 2-2.5K every month on food/drinks/entertainment

I've never met someone who blew that kind of money every month.

I'm guessing the "terrible with money" comment was based upon my New Orleans rent estimate, because most of your figures here were similar to what I estimated earlier.

$2500/month is a very solid drug habit
