Meh, you should be able to live comfortably on that in Seattle.
I have a wife and two teenagers. I think this list is for single people.

That is nuts. As a young single guy when I was first out of school, I was in the low 50s and didn't want for anything in NOLA while saving money every month without trying
Where did you live? Roommates?

You can definitely live comfortably in NYC making this as long as you are splitting rent with 1-2 other people. I find it hard to believr someone can live comfortably tho in a 1br situation, that would be really pushing it.

I wouldn't term that as comfortable living, at all

Yeah, that would be tough for a family of 4. I'm worried Seattle is going to turn into the next San Francisco. My GF and I have been looking at buying and we have a strong combined income for two people with no kids, but buying a house right now just seems like a losing proposition

Per month? Seems about right.

If you're worried that real estate prices are about to explode, wouldn't you want to buy now?

I think that would be a good area to buy some shitty, undesirable property, maybe some with rental income, and wait for a developer to come in and buy it and the surrounding area, there would be your house

no way in hell it costs more to live in Houston than Austin
I just went from New Orleans to Austin and New Orleans being more expensive got me too.
Of course, you may pay more for housing in Austin, but then you have a reasonable chance of sending your kids to public school which saves you $8,000 per kid a year at least.

Ya, I didn't make much more than that at first and lived by Tulane.
It was under 1,000 sq feet but I wasn't in the total hood.
Though that was until 2013. I got a little bigger place when my now wife moved in. Then I bought.

true
I just dont think that study correctly took into account the biggest chunk of anyone's expenses: housing
available housing in Austin proper has completely jumped the shark
Posted on 4/19/16 at 12:15 pm to Teddy Ruxpin
Making 60,000 gives you take home around 3,200 a month
You should live more than comfortably as a single guy in NOLA on that. Unless you are horrible with money

Tell me about it and my $3,000 a month rent. I'm just going to stay here as long as possible and hope it doesn't get raised by being a good tenant.
And if it crashes, I'll renegotiate out or leave.
I'm terrified to buy here. Economy is better than New Orleans, but the flip side is there is land in every direction for more houses unlike said New Orleans.

Wait, what are you doing in Austin?

Wife got a BIGLAW job. I'm a kept man.
I was able to move my stuff here since I do have that TX client. Just flipped everything. All happened in 5 weeks.

geebus....I know the area where you live, and that's way too much
I know what it's like to just move to a new city and sometimes you have to suck it up a bit, but damn. I hope you're in a 4BR or something for that money
sorry, dont mean to be a complete arse

It's essentially brand new 2200 sq with 2BRs and an Office/3BR. Comes with a yard and all that. Dude wanted $3,500.
Keeping the commute from being horrific was the tradeoff I suppose.
