If you make between 30 and 40 grand annually you can live pretty good most places in Louisiana.

I could live pretty cheap if I needed to but we'd have to adjust our lifestyle quite a bit to live on 63k. I'm assuming this is household income.

Define comfortably? Most apartments in BR in an area where you won’t get shot are $1000/mo for a 1 bedroom.

Baton Rouge is not one of those places.
I mean places like Raceland or Mamou where the median income is like fricking 20 grand.

I have a family member bringing in $18k a year from the government and they’re happier than a dog with two peters.

This seems to be per person. So a family would need $120k in Alabama or $126k in Louisiana.
They define "comfortably" as being able to live with the 50/30/20 rule:
Seems about right, honestly. I mean, having kids in daycare will be a drain on almost anyone with two incomes. If you can get to the point where daycare isn't a drain, then you probably could survive with a SAHM in the house or just pay the daycare if she wants to pursue her career.
$120k/year comes out to about $7000/month after taxes and insurance. CoL in Alabama is really cheap, so you can find a nice house with a mortgage of $2000/month in any of the big cities. $5000 leftover for food, savings, retirement, vacations, necessities...seems pretty comfortable.
