For the first name, I printed off the top names from social security records. We each marked off the names we didn't like. We had about 10 remaining names that matched. We decided from there.

I applaud your autism.

I wouldn't marry someone who likes "unique" names, much less have a child with that person.

My son's name is my middle name, so I'd say a lot.

I actually suggest both of my daughter's names and my wife liked them.

I should note that my wife has a white trash name herself. As an interesting anecdote, my wife's brother is her dad, Jr., so a classic name. Both of his sons have trashy travel ball names with weird spellings.

One could form a hypothesis from this information that if one knows what its like to have a white trash name, they ware less likely to pass that on to their children. However, if one grows up with a classic name, they may not see the danger in naming their son something that could be a strippers name.

Two of my spawns were easy to name, as we used family names.

Our third was a bit harder. We just couldn't find a name that we both agreed on. Now, I know this part will sound trashy. About a month before the baby was born, the wife (no pics) and I were watching a sitcom and we hear a character's name that just clicked with both of us.

And yes, it is a normal name, not something "unique" but it was just a name that never occurred to us.

Yes, one of my children is named after a minor character from a sitcom. Very trashy, but you just never know where the inspiration will come from.

It was a mutual decision both times. She did let me pick daughter's middle name between the final 2. Son is named after 2 of his great-grandfathers, and his was easy. We struggled with the daughter though for a few months.

We agreed on both of my childrens' names. My daughter was the hardest; we went through at least 100 names before we found one we agreed on.

You sound like a little boy who shouldn't be having kids yet.

I wanted to name my son Willem. After much ridicule I relented.

His name is Willem in my phone...so HA.

You want unique? How about Howard or Ralph. I bet there won't be any others in his class.

How about Adolph? It's a classic that hasn't been commonly used in the last 80 years or so...can't get much more unique than that.

I met a guy a few years ago named Adolf. I started to ask him, "uh..." and he said, "yeah my dad was a neo-nazi." Can't believe the guy still owned it.

Quite a bit. The first group of names by wife presented were unique. Not in the travel ball/future hair dresser sense, but in an "old southern style" sense. I immediately shot down her first two choices (with probably a bit too much ridicule)...which led to crying. Eventually we settled on a family name (her mother's name) that while not used that often today, is still very much a traditional name. The second child was named after my grandmother and is both traditional and very common.

Naming your kid is one of the most important things you can do for THEM, not you! Your child has no say in the matter, but will have to live with that name for the rest of his/her life. Try to think about you child as a 40, 50, 60 year old adult with that name...(because they will be one eventually), not satisfying your selfish need to have some stupid "unique" name that will seem even dumber 20, 30 years down the road.

If there is ever a time to be selfless, it's when you are choosing your child's name.

I’m big into travel ball so I had all the input in Braxon’s name.

I had an uncle Adolph. He went by "Dolphie" since childhood, so it didn't come up all that often.
