Just to clear it up for OP. The price is the same or probably a little more than if you just paid someone $40 as needed. FYI

During the winter, you'll be paying the dude $20 to play xbox

If they are doing it that cheap then they don't have insurance. $20 cut end up costing you $200,000 when they break they're ankle mowing your lawn.

I have a corner lot. Huge yard, found a guy who charges 65, edges it as well. Surprised when he was using a push mower. It's growing slow enough now he comes every two weeks.

that's not normal, but not unheard of either...basically just wants to have a steady income stream. you have to just 1040 by the number of times he will actually cut your grass and you have the "real" cost. a pretty good rule of thumb is that by thanksgiving, the grass and leaf mowing is done...

if you do sign something like that, be sure it is understood when he will cut...that is, will he continue to clean up leaves after the grass stops growing?....will he cut early in the spring when the grass is not growing, but clover etc. is coming up in patches?....

Will he clean up leaves during the fall/winter? If not, you'll have to pay someone else for that.

I pay 45, just up from 40, as needed. My lot is smaller than yours. I hate mowing/edging, so it is well worth it for me.

$20 a week is cheap. We pay $25 a cut but our yard is relatively small, it is still a great price. Is he going to charge you per week even if he doesn't get a cut in because of weather? I'd rather be paying per cut than per week but perhaps that's what you meant.

Oh, I see why he is so cheap. He IS charging per week. We pay per cut so in December we may only get one cut, two max. Same for Jan, Feb, and maybe even March depending on weather. No way am I paying someone $20 a week to do nothing. I'd tell him you'd rather pay more per cut and have no contract.

I own a lawnservice and $20/week is cheap . 90% of lawnservices includes edging, weedeating, and blowing. If you are only paying $80/month year round you are getting a helluva deal.

FWIW. Most residential yards avg $50 a cut

$0. I have a huge backyard alone, would take several hours if I did it myself. But I rent, and the rental company handles all mowing, landscaping, etc. Ya-hoo.

A lot of good, reputable guys around this area charge a $50 minimum per yard even if they are lined up.

Does this lawn guy have a bunch of yards in your subdivision? If so, that is why they will do it so cheap, if they can just move to the next yard on their mower, they can do it cheap as hell especially if you don't have much weed eating to do.

Around here, contracts aren't unheard of at all and they typically cut on a two week cycle during the year and then clean up during the fall and winter.

ETA. All this said, I bought a nice zero turn and enjoy cutting my grass and annoying my dogs hauling arse around the yard.

Pay him to come out and cut it once and see what kind of job he does on it. His contract is pretty dumb. Most lawn contracts are for 36-40 mows a year with the winter months only doing it one time each. There's nothing to mow every week. I'm willing to bet he doesn't show up every week and just collects a check from you.

Lawn care guys are usually ex cons or ex cops that are whacked out on meth and pain pills.
I know one, and the dude can't stay out trouble. About to get divorced, addicted to weed, and drinks all day.

Be careful.

$40 a week. That's for trimming, mowing, and keeping the flower beds clean. That's pretty cheap compared to where I lived before as well. Houston has access to cheap labor. I'd be paying double that before I moved.
