I usually pay to take my mom with us. If it’s international somewhere around 30-40k. If it’s here in the US, around 10k

$10k for a family of 4

If we go under, great

but it seems like every time we go on vacation now its $10k, so that is what I allocate for out annual family vacation

if its overseas, then up to $15k

What's the expected amount for a run-of-the-mill family of four vacation? Nothing too extravagant.

Serious Answer, it depends. You can get a VRBO that fits almost any budget. But, to get a decent one that your wife will not hate, it's gonna be $300/night.

Gas: $300-400
Lodging: $1500-2000
Food: $1000 ($200-$300/day unless you're packing and eating a bunch)
Incidentals: $1000 $200/day (tours, souveniers, tickets, drinks, etc.)

So, a week long vacation is going to be $3500 to $6000. Hope this helps.

this reminds me of the thread a couple years ago with the guy saying 5k is an excessive amount to spend on a family (beach) vacation

My wife does all the planning, I'm a go with the flow type of person.

My wife likes to plan out what gas station we stop a week in advance at when visiting my my parents. They live 1.5 hours away.

Even with today's inflated prices, $5k is way more than I'd spend on a beach vacation. Which beach are you going to, and how many nights are you staying that $5k is reasonable?

You’ll need about $10,500

Take about $500 and take the kids to the zoo and buy them some toys and shite.

Table $10k and you and the misses fly to Vegas, get a high end hooker for the night and some blow.

If you're spending $10k-$15k on a vacation for 2 adults and 2 small children.....for a domestic vacation....you're still doing it wrong

We save money every pay period, but it isn't really allocated to anything in particular. If we have to dip into that to go on a trip, we do, sometimes we can just cut back on our current monthly budget and not take money out of the savings. It really just depends on the trip, we also use credit card points for flights and such.

We do a lot of trips where we piggy back off of a conference or training that my wife attends, so that limits flight cost, and a couple hotel nights.

It also helps that for most vacations the cost is broken up, we may pay for flights one month, and then lodging another month.

Book your house in seaside Florida for about 10K and then add another 5K for gas/food/drinks/entertainment.

I looked it up. it wasn't specifically beach vacations.

Those saying $5k are blowing me away. Are y’all going to Hawaii or Europe every year or something? Fuuuuuck that. I spend $2,500 at most (usually $1,500-$2,000) on most family vacations. Hell, even a Disney trip for the family costs me $3,100 but that’s so few and far between. If you’re spending $5k on a typical family vacation, you either need to invest in a vasectomy or tone down your extravagant vacations.

Or maybe I’m just a tightwad, who knows. No way am I regularly spending &5k on a family vacation every year.

But it's also not hard to spend 5k for a week on the beach on 30a.

Agreed, but I'm also not a go to the beach for 7 nights kinda person. We usually just do a 3-4 night trip, and I'm good with that.

ETA: Yeah, if I was going to 30a for 7 nights I could definitely spend 5k. Looking at ~$500 per night, so that's $3,500 with just lodging.

You can overspend anywhere. $5k is well above a "standard" level vacation for me, but I guess I'm just not OT baller enough.

We usually average around 10k per trip. I’m planning a ski trip for next year and it’s going to be significantly more. Value memories above all else.

Assuming you're flying, it should ALL start with finding deals on airfare. I subscribe to GOING, which is formerly Scott's Cheap Flights. I think its 50 per year. Its extremely well worth it and has saved me thousands annually.

We almost always get cheap airfare on the front end, then book the trip from there.

IF you insist on driving, thats up to you.

I with you on that, but some places, during certain times of the year have 1 week minimums.

Although I work for myself and my wife has unlimited vacation, with our teenage daughter and 20 year old son in college, there's no way we can just drop everything for 7 days

3-4 nights is good with us
