so you'll spend 3.5k to go to the beach in Alabama but 5k is excessive. got it.

Who's spending $3500?

that was intentional. i assumed that 4k would be close enough to 5k.

Yea what's an extra 25%? Didn't realize you were Biden's financial guy.

Gatlinburg is very expensive. At least it was for us. Spent just as much as Disney trip (off-season/late August). It's a tourist trap and every little thing costs extra money whereas Disney was more or less an all-inclusive

let me use your $2800 hotel example

for us, I would have to add

gas $400 (8 hour drive for me)
food to cook $300 (4 people for a week)
drinks $200 (not big drinkers)
eating out $500 (my family would want to eat out a few times, plus on the road food)

so even with your "cheap" hotel accommodations, I'm pushing $5k without considering all the other random shite that comes with vacation

We went to Europe for Mardi Gras week. Total spend was about $7500 for 4. We booked air bnb about a year out. Nothing fancy but was in a good part of the city we visited and was adequate for our needs. We were out sightseeing most of the time, so rarely there anyway. We scouted deals for airline tickets for months. We ended up paying $585 per person round trip. That didn’t include luggage as we just did carry on and our air bnb had a washer and dryer in the apartment. Also included 2 days and nights at Disney land Paris. Took the metro a bunch. Got all you can ride tickets for the week. You can definitely budget for big trips like this if you book far in advance and stay on top of airline deals. Obviously we didn’t stay at a 5 star resort or fly first class but we got to take an awesome vacation and see a country we’ve never been to before.

You using jet fuel? assuming 20mpg, gas is costing you less than $140 right now.

Not big drinkers but you're spending $200 on drinks?

Not even worth dissecting the rest.

We usually just go to north Georgia every summer .
Pretty reasonable on all fronts.
Couple grand for a week in a nice cabin and eat out a few times gas etc,

Don’t drive 9 hours. Time is the biggest asset

Gas costs more in the summer. There and back, conservatively you are looking at $250.

not drinking Bud Light

$5k doesn't seem unreasonable for someone that isn't strictly working on a tight budget and lives farther away

No fricking way. I priced it at $3 a gallon. I'll give you $200 tops.

What are you drinking to spend $200 while not being a big drinker?

You're including a lot of money on groceries on top of at least 4 meals dining out. If you want to just artificially inflate the number, be my guest. But don't expect me to just accept your math.

We haven't even addressed that a single frailly most likely isn't staying in a 3 bed 4 bath 2200 sqft luxury condo, so the cost goes down significantly when you use a more reasonable condo type.

for a week? craft beer is like $16 for a 4pack and couple bottle of wines for the wife/dinner

didn't think that was unreasonable

ok

I'm not saying you have to spend $5k, just that it isn't unreasonable, even with your "cheap" accommodations, especially if you don't like to cook on vacation, which is true for a lot of people

How many 4 packs are you drinking if you're not a big drinker? How fancy is the wine you're buying?

$5k for a gulf coast beach vacay is splurging no matter which way you try to slice it. Yes you absolutely can spend $5k or more on a gulf coast beach trip, but you can easily do it for significantly less while still being beachfront.

For a family of 5, rule of thumb was to budget $1k/day to be safe (assuming domestic travel). Since you're 4, do $750 I suppose

Average I'd guess around $5-8k.

Don't really ever save for a vacation specifically. I just have a set amount of money from each paycheck that automatically goes to savings. But again, it's not an amount for savings, it's basically all bills paid off, leave a few bucks in checking, and everything else goes to savings. Then vacation comes out of that bucket.
