$25k, with $20k of that having to sue over custody post divorce. 1/2 of my retirement accounts, and we split the proceeds from the sale of the house.
Dentist friend, approximately 4 years and over 100k on lawyers alone.

Not much, but that was a long time ago, and we had been married less than 2 years. We didn't have much, as I had just graduated from college. It was not a fun 8 months as I was trying to save the marriage up until the end, but in the end, I dictated who got what. It was a pretty minimal filing charge, no kids, no alimony...just be gone.

About 3500 for lawyer and fees.
But it still costs me to this day. I went from a two income household and no kids to a one income household and a daughter. It costs me money in that regard, and it costs me time with my daughter.
The cost of the latter is something I will never get back.

I suspect some of you are bad at math. This may have been the transactional expenses for the divorce itself, but what did the actual divorce cost you all in (i.e., what were the monetary asset losses)?

less than $2k. We shared a lawyer

I have a distant relative that was high up in the airline industry and he had hoarded several million in a side account. He turned into a pretty big piece of crap at the end of their marriage. She hired a forensic auditor and he discovered a $7m side fund he had hidden. She ended up with half of everything.

When it was all said and done, a little over 100k. Our house was paid off but I ended up giving her the house and 10 acres of land to keep her out of my business (Construction company - Renovation).

Amen. It didn't cost me much, but then I didn't have much at that time. I doubt the next 3 or 4 husbands got off as easily, and at least one had to deal with her crap until their kids became adults.
At one point, we went to a marriage counselor for several visits. Obviously didn't save our marriage. About 20 years later, I ran into that counselor at a party. She hugged my neck and whispered, "You don't know how lucky you were." I assured her that I did.

You are going to get a lot of bullshite responses here, but divorce costs you way more than money.
I don't care who was at fault or what happened, it is tough, and it affects you for a very long time.
I am NOT advocating for people staying in bad marriages. I am saying that even when your break free from a really bad one, there is an emotional cost. Don't underestimate it.

No lawyer fees since my uncle was my attorney. Ex represented himself. Half the equity each when we sold the house and we did not argue on the property settlement or custody agreement.

Everything and worth every penny

About $10K. Plus child support which was resonable.
Get a good lawyer. It's an investment.
Worth the price and MORE!

About $125-150k lost time value of money on the divorce cost.
Presume the emotional value of each spouse, child and perhaps extended family was not “cheap”?
Know divorce may be absolutely best thing for a family.
However, if a selfish act and / short cut, f’n yikes.

Nope... I went off the rails.
It was 80% on me and I thank God every single day for first saving us separately then saving our marriage and family.
