Very similar, East Texas is just cleaner. Shreveport is rough. Bossier City s fine. Haughton and Benton are booming.
If you live in NW part of Louisiana you aren’t claimed by Louisiana. Same can be said for south Arkansas. Arkansas doesn’t claim Arkansans unless they are in Little Rock or North of there. East Texas claims south Arkansas and North Louisiana folks.

1. East Texas has roads. Louisiana has roads. That's where the similarity ends with regard to roads -- an FM road in East Texas or a Ranch Road in West Texas is smoother and better painted than a state or US highway in Louisiana. I've never understood this because it's the same in Texas from Brownsville to Dalhart and Marshal to El Paso. And Texas doesn't even have a "road use tax" like LA -- where is THAT money going?
2. Gas stations are noticeably different. The "out in the middle of nowhere mega gas station" is a Texas thing. Lots of pumps, big bathrooms, 50 Lotto scratch-offs for sale, etc.
3. Mileage signs out in the middle of nowhere showing mileage to cities, towns, and "slow spots in the road" are ubiquitous on almost every turn-off in East Texas. Don't see them near as frequently in Louisiana.
3. Louisiana has much better seafood restaurants.
Thanks for attending my Tex talk.

Shreveport is a shithole anymore. It is not comparable to many Texas towns of similar size
Beaumont/Port Arthur is a worse place than Shreveport but not by much. The Golden Triangle and Shreveport are both better than Lake Charles. All the folks in that area are the same and are good folks but unless you want to hunt or fish the quality of life in TGT or LC sucks
To the North there is Texarkana, TX where all the folks are more like Arkansans which is much worse.

Having briefly lived in Shreveport I can say that the natives are Dallas wannabes.

Tell me you've never driven in Beaumont or Houston without saying you've never driven in Beaumont or Houston.
the streets and surface roads in SE Texas might as well be Lakeview. the city of Houston is filthy as frick.

What are the main similarities?
Accent and general attitudes about life.

Differences?
Mainly LSU fans in NW Louisiana vs Texas/aTm fans in East Texas.
Another anomaly is East Texas like either the Texans or the Cowboys in the NFL. NW Louisiana like either the Saints or the Cowboys in the NFL

By the way when you talk to someone there's East Texas and then there's Deep East Texas! Texans know the difference. ??
East Texas is Tyler/Longview area
Deep East Texas is Nacogdoches/Lufkin area.
Southeast Texas is Beaumont/Port Arthur area
Basically just sub regions centered around population hubs. I’d say Deep ETX is the most rural of the 3. However all of these areas can also be referred to simply as “East Texas”. Much like how Abilene is West Texas and Midland is West Texas.
Shreveport is a population and economic hub in the ARKLATEX region. I’d say it’s separate than East Texas it’s more apart of the far NE corner of Texas along with Texarkana

How much cultural overlap is there between East Texas and NW Louisiana?

It’s strange living just 60 miles east of Shreveport, but at least 50% of them are cowboys fans. I don’t know where the dividing line is, maybe Minden, but by the time you get to Ruston almost everybody are Saints fans. Also, Shreveport people don’t pronounce “wash” correctly. Most people ive known from around there pronounce it woarsh. I’m not sure if Longview/Tyler people pronounce it this way or not.

Shreveport Texarkana is a market and this is a cowboys market. Who’s on tv every Sunday for decades drives who you are a fan of. Pro sports is dumb like that. It’s why you got so many cubs and braves fans outside of Chicago and Atlanta. You are a fan of who you have access to.
