I've been driving for Uber for over a year, and it is starting too not be worth it. It is also rare for people to tip now a days; I can't imagine doing it for a living right now.

This is not normal. LA is still $2.13+
Yeah there are only 6 states or so who do not allow tipped employees to be paid less than the state minimum wage. But LAs labor laws aren’t applicable or my problem. I don’t understand why we are expected to subsidize labor costs for a company with voluntary payments to their employees. A business should pay an employee what it takes to staff their business appropriately. Then charge me whatever amount for the service that they need to in order to make a profit. Tipping is completely unnecessary.

I have literally never tipped an Uber driver. Do most people fall for that?

Fall for what?
And why is being a cheapskate a flex on the OT?

I only drive on weekends to make up the saving I spent during the lockdown. Ironically, I was making around 7k a month when I started Ubering fulltime for a few months in 2021. I was also working 70 - 80 hours a week to earn that much.

Just the tip, just to see how it feels.

Drivers don't get that. They USE to get all the surge, then most of the surge, then half the surge, now none of the surge. The pay for drivers is completely disconnected from what the customer pays now.
Pretty funny this is getting downvotes when it's true. They went from surge being 2x for example to $2, meaning instead of double fare you get two extra dollars.

I don’t use them often, so I usually give $5 or so. Sometimes it’s a “tip” because they were really nice or helpful, but other times it’s more of a donation because I feel sorry for them.
If I rode more often, I’d probably dial that down.

In Seattle, it is certainly 75%. Multiple drivers have informed me, because they get paid more due to a city ordinance being passed by the current Mayor that when they work Seattle the pay is higher than any burb outside of the DT city limits.
So Uber drivers get paid more in one city due to one city ordinance and you claim all drivers get 75%? There is no longer a minimum fair percentage in MOST markets. There use to be a 40% minimum in Baton Rouge/Nola but that is gone. You can still make money if you drive the right days at the right time, but for most days it is pitiful. I am glad I don't need to drive. My clinical and lab schedules keep me from taking on a regular job but I have cash from previous ventures and zero debt so I don't really need the money. It is just nice to not dip into savings as hard to maintain your lifestyle.

No one in LA is getting that. I looked at the last rides I gave, and it's under 50% on average.

Maybe a couple of bucks if it's an entertaining ride. I remember my first Uber for an LSU game in Houston and guy pulls up, gets out of car and opens door. Had water and snacks. Was like black car service. shite sucks now.

I've hit the 20% button every time, I think. These folks are usually driving as a side gig, just trying to supplement their income, pay down some bills...live that Dave Ramsey "deliver pizza if you have to" kind of lifestyle. I'm happy to drop a few extra bucks if it helps them out.

$0. The original point of Uber was it was different than cabs and didn’t even have a tip option.
Then a few years later they added it. If you want your workers to get paid more, pay them. Don’t expect consumers to subsidize it.

Last weekend I got in to MSY from Vegas on a flight that ran late, and didn't land until about 2:30 AM. Took a cab (not an Uber) to my house. Paid the cabbie a $4.00 tip just to round it out, and because he got me home quickly. Guy was like Mario Andretti in a nice minivan.

Zero
Haven’t used ride share apps in a couple years but I would never tip

Where I'm from we don't have Uber. But in Athens I usually throw a 20 tip on a ride across town. After the ND game in Athens, I stole an Uber ride and gave the driver 100 bill for his trouble to drive my crew about 6 miles. Was worth every penny.
Posted on 7/27/22 at 11:26 pm to TitleistProV1X
Most of my rides are like 8-11 dollar fares.
Tip three dollars and call it a day.
This forum has become obsessed with not tipping, but when have we EVER not tipped drivers?

When any of you die... You won't realize it. You will think it is a dream and you called an Uber to give you a ride home from a night out with your loved one. It comes time to tip you will make your selection and then God swoops in and casts the ultimate judgement.
Careful mane. It's a tough world out there.
