Starting pay for an entry operator at a refinery where I worked was $29.50 in 2018. Starting pay in a gas plant (methane/ethane) in west Texas was about the same this summer.

Most guys will have to drive 1 hour + to and from work. Driving down to Cameron on foggy mornings/nights isn’t for the faint of heart. Thats why they have to dish out money to get people down there.

The unit I work in lost 7 people to the LNG plant in Plaquemines at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. All but 1 were newer employees with less than 2 years experience. We were paying them in the low $40’s an hour and LNG was high $40’s to low 50’s for their background and experience. Along with the promise of free cell phones, car allowances, guaranteed bonuses, and free health insurance. The other 1 that went lived closer to there than our plant so it made sense for him to go. One guy who stayed with us after he got an offer, was offered $55 an hour to start with a $10k sign on bonus to be a DCS operator. He had 15 years of previous operator experience. This was in the summer of 2025. He was basically making $55 an hour already at our unit so it wasn’t worth the drive for him.

Average starting pay is around $80k a year and average top out is around $130k a year. Those are true for where I work. Thats based on 40 hours a week. Not counting built in overtime and holidays.

This is partially true. Top end figure is exaggerated unless they're the lead. CP1 or PQ operator should have no problems making $150K.

What “skills” are needed?
Might be time for a career change from white collar work to the trades.

Normal top pay is in the 55/hr range. It can go up from there depending on position. They also get built in overtime in their schedule and paid holidays. Most make in 150-200k range. Those younger bucks hungry for the ot can push that number well over 200k though.

Hourly? No idea, but it’s fairly consistent across the board. An FQO can make 200+ per year IF there are willing to work 800+ hrs of OT a year. My cousin is a DE for the same company I work for and I’m here to tell you he doesn’t touch what I make BUT…..he’s home twice as much so that’s the real benefit.

I make more working 7:30 to 4 M-F, but we are still wage slaves.

You just have to be able to turn a valve wrench and be lazy and a smartass when maintenance comes in to get permits. That’s it!

It’s not that much. Had one of our guys got talked into going down there and we sat and broke it down with benefits and all that. Starting around $46-49 an hour. After the sign on bonus, it looks like it’s more, but it’s not.
That is just not enough to pay me to drive an hour and a half to Cameron each work day after waking up at 2:30 am to get there. On top of there are already a ton of senior guys taking tons of vacation and you’re left covering for it because they don’t have the site completely manned yet. It was something to that extent. So you’re there for 3 out of the 4 weeks of the month.
No fricking thanks. Too much driving and the schedule is 7 and 7. Wednesday to Wednesday. I’m out. Couldn’t pay me double to do that bullshite. I’d be divorced in a year and she’d take 3/4 of it all.
