shite I was making significantly less than that and had to wear a suit everyday. After 4 years of that, decided it was time to get a better career.

I was coming to post this. Suit 5 days a week is a significant upgrade from just shirt and tie.

Will you see the same people everyday at work? As a consultant I wear a suit and tie but often each day is with a different group. On a given week I can use two suits but mix and match shirts/ties. If I am in one place all week I historically will wear a different suit each day.

Only one. Wear it every day for 2 weeks, then trash it and buy a new one.

4 Light Gray
4 Dark Gray
5 Navy
3 Wool

NEVER BUY BLACK SUIT. Unless you're a waiter or bellhop.

About 5 is right. Mid level suits are the way to go. They will look fine and will last considerably longer than cheap suits. Cheap suits fall apart when you wear them a lot.

And even if you aren’t a baller, consider the Brooks Brothers no iron shirts. Wash, dry, hang up. Easy and will last years of regular wear.

More important is to have quite a few shirts and ties.

One of my first life lessons from my dad. Different color shirt plus different tie equals different suit

I have 7 that I rotate for work, and then 3 that I don't wear to work.

Absolutely. An added plus too is that if you MUST wear suits for work, that is a tax write off. I would buy new shirts/suits/ties a lot because of this.

I'm about to accept a new job where the dress will be suit and tie. My current job is business casual and I hardly ever have had to wear a suit.

I own three suits (1 grey, 1 black, 1 blue). I've never had to wear a suit everyday, so I don't know what the "rule" or norms for this are.

Are you going to be interacting with clients every day?

If so, I'd say somewhere on the order of 6 to 8. You don't have to get a new batch all at once, though - build up to it.

If it's just a desk role or something like that, 4 or 5 (about one for every day of the week) would definitely be enough.

Switching up tie, shirt, and shoe combinations helps, too.

Edit: And never wear the black suit to work.

You'll be fine starting here and mix and match shirts and ties. Buy a new suit every quarter, until you are comfortable with the number you rotate.

I suck at matching shirts and ties and suits. I’m not good with colors and shite.

I have a buddy that went to work for the FBI. He showed up the first day in a conservative charcoal gray suit. He had watched the weather and saw rain coming and brought his big, multicolored golf umbrella.

When he got there, everybody had a black suit and black umbrella. He conformed the next day.

I had 3 that fit well when I started this job. Picked up another right off the bat so I had 4 I could wear every week, and throw in another of my older ones from time to time. Gradually added another one here and there when I found a good one on sale. But we were business casual on Fridays, and we could wear a sportcoat. It was coat and tie, but didn't have to be a suit. I was so glad when we ditched that for business casual last year. I still wear a suit every now and then to work, but rarely a tie anymore. Like many have said, focus on new shirts and pick up a few more ties before you go buying more suits.
